Night on the Shore of lake Wakatipu by Bai Chuang Shyu

November 2020 - Night on the Shore of lake Wakatipu

About the Image(s)

I was attending an International conference in Qeenstown, New Zealand. Queenstown is a beautiful small city by the Lake Wakatipu. There are many bars and restaurant along the shore. Many tourists are full on the street. I really enjoy the vivid and romantic atmosphere here along the shore. My Nikon D810 was on tripod with f/16, 20 seconds and ISO100. I was regret that the image was taken too late so that the background was completed dark and lost the details. Post processing was done by Viveza2 and cropped in Photoshop.

Bai, I like all your nighttime photos! This one is quite interesting with all the lights, images from within some of the shops, starburst lights, lights showing beneath the ship and nice reflections in the water. Nicely done! You might consider cutting off some of the top to reduce the amount of background that you consider regrettable. The red smoke (?) on the hillside is a bit distracting.   Posted: 11/02/2020 10:44:38

I agree with Don and enjoy seeing your nighttime images. I like the small-town feel of this New Zealand lakefront town with the ferry coming into dock. However, I find the reddish color a little odd although it's probably caused by the lights. I took the liberty to try to correct the color cast by making the reddish color more yellowish. I was aiming for a yellow-and-blue complementary-color contrast, but not very successful.   Posted: 11/02/2020 11:54:51

What about color balance? Do you have another exposure in which more of the reflection is included? The top third of third image could be cropped.   Posted: 11/03/2020 21:14:05

I try to use David's revised image and made addition of reflection. The top one third is cropped. It is excellent way to improve my image.   Posted: 11/18/2020 09:32:19

You do such a nice job with your night photography. I love the way the buildings are illuminated and the lights reflecting in the water. The buildings have great clarity and detail. I agree with David, that you could adjust the color away from the orange cast just a bit. You could crop down some on the top, however, I like the way the blue sky on the left compliments the blue roof on the right.   Posted: 11/07/2020 09:23:49

Nice evening image! I like the blue color in the sky on the upper left. And I like the excitement that the color red imparts to the scene. The color red could be toned down in the image a bit. Otherwise, there is so much to attract your attention, especially the ship on the left hand side. The ship and the stores along the waterfront are very sharp. Good job!

nice night image. a few highlight in there bother me, and I just dial down 5 on highlight, that did it, however, the details are missing. Agree with you, a bit earlier might do better. Did you have a bracket set shot, might still have a shot of pickup that missing details.   Posted: 11/17/2020 21:18:12

Charlie, thanks for your suggestion! I do have some images with longer exposure time.Unfortunately because it was too dark, none of them can reveal any details. I should have gone there earlier!   Posted: 11/18/2020 09:36:26
