About the Image(s)

I shot this lotus flower earlier this month (July) at the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington DC. I try to go there every year in July to shoot lotus flowers and water lilies when they are at peak bloom. The best images are taken when the gardens open at 7:00am when the lighting is best - provided it's not cloudy and not too windy. And, there are few people there that early in the morning - only other photographers. I post-processed the image in Lightroom and Photoshop to darken the background and warm the highlights a little. Shot with a Canon EOS R with a 100-400mm zoom lens (at 227mm) on a tripod. Exposure was 1/320 sec @f/8.0 and ISO 100.

A beautiful lotus flower image. I'm always curious about settings for flower images because of decisions of what to get in focus and how. Your f-stop and long lens got you the whole top of the flower in focus. Well done. The flower seems to glow. So I like your decisions on darkening background and raising the highlights. You nailed it.   Posted: 08/02/2020 12:29:28

Its beautiful, David. I appreciate your work since I have a botanical garden close to which a few friends and I go every other year trying to catch just the right blossom season. So much detail shows on the leaves and in the center. Appears the center is a solid bit of blossom. Haven't seen such a center. The flower is nicely set off from the background.   Posted: 08/03/2020 08:24:37

I like everything about this beautiful flower image. The lighting is exquisite. You have great details, even in the bright petals and the blurred, dark background really sets off the flower beautifully. I wouldn't change a thing.   Posted: 08/07/2020 09:54:40
