The Guitarist by Ray Henrikson

October 2019 - The Guitarist

About the Image(s)

Photographed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinaw Island in Lake Michigan. A musician providing music during lunch. We happened to be seated close to him. Available light, ISO 6400, hand-held. As soon as I sat at the table, I realized this was a photo opportunity. I couldn't move around him. I liked his concentration and also the background. I think of this as a variation on street photography.

Nice composition Ray. I have struggled with composition and musicians. I haven't quite got it right yet. And I agree you have a good background with the curtain. It is sharp, but the musician doesn't appear to be as sharp. Is this because of focus or because you had to hand-hold the camera? In any case, I like your work.   Posted: 10/09/2019 07:41:25

Nice photo, Ray. I think the background is okay here. Too bad the symbal is behind his face, although it is part of the "scene". Good profile shot!   Posted: 10/09/2019 16:25:59

Your photo tells a story and shows the concentration of the musician who looks like he is lost in the music. It looks to me like your camera focused on the cymbals rather than the guitarist who is out of focus. If possible, it might have been nice to have the whole neck of the guitar in the frame.   Posted: 10/10/2019 13:28:36

I was focusing on the cymbals and hoped DOF would include the musician. It almost worked! I did some severe cropping to get rid of extraneous stuff and part of the guitar went in the process.   Posted: 10/12/2019 10:48:42
