February 2021 - Modified City Hall

About the Image(s)

This was shot today. The Subject is the former South Cle Elum (Washington) City Hall. The building was vacated decades ago and moved at least once. About two years ago the current owner bought the property. Prior to that the building had slipped into disrepair. The owner is a rust collector with a touch of artist in his veins. He put plenty of work into the place to clean it up and give it a personality. The paint job is the colors of the defunct Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad. (Milwaukee Road) The line came west to Tacoma, WA about 1900. The Depot is a few yards away from here.
Nikon D800E, Sigma 24-105, ISO 400, F11, metered -2, 0 and +2. Aurora 2018. Cropped in PS CC 2021.

Please don't misunderstand me as I don't mean to be critical, but in that this is a study group, I'd like to offer a suggestion. The image is well done but kind of "I came, I saw, I shot it". I don't know if you have the latest photoshop but if you do, have you tried sky replacement?. If you have don't and you have your own collection of skies it's a bit more time consuming, but at the very least, you can enhance the sky just enough to be more than just there.
Again, I hope you do not take offense as it is not meant that way.   Posted: 02/04/2021 07:18:02

I think I need to retrain my "Color Monkey." The sky could use a boost. I won't be adding a foreign image to DD 44 submissions. To me, the point of DD 44 is to learn how to work with the scene you have.

In the 80's a photo mag did an article on Journalists "cooking the image". At that time it was mortal sin. Eugene Smith was criticized soundly for fixing a bland corner in his image of Sweitzer by adding a tool box. Everything stayed in context, but he "cooked it" and got slapped by his peers. We are working with art, here, not Journalism....but I choose to keep it simple.   Posted: 02/04/2021 11:40:15

The blend looks fine. You could probably darken the sky with some Dehaze, but that is a tweak. It captures the story you relate well and the added context helps for trying to figure out why the railroad sign is on the door (interesting that a town hall had a door like that), but I'm finding multiple potential extracts here (the door and building by themselves, the old rusty crossing lights possibly against the sky, and my favorite, the wooden eagle nest complete with fish. Definitely worth a revisit. I'd love to see the eagle nest on its own against the sky. That could be a lot of fun.   Posted: 02/16/2021 16:26:03

Interesting place and definitely worth a visit. There are several images here and a lot to look at. The blend looks very natural since there doesn't seem to be a lot of contrast in the scene. I think it just needs to be simplified a little.   Posted: 02/20/2021 09:14:12

Nice colors on this historical building. A good find and I can see why you wanted to include the eagle. I felt to make it appear more towards the main subject I cropped out the background to give, in my interpretation, a more compact image. Since this is an old building, I felt the power lines broke away from that so took them out too. The results are shown here.   Posted: 02/25/2021 10:33:34

I like your edit Max. The scene had a lot in it and this made it pop more.   Posted: 02/25/2021 11:53:17

There is a lot going on in the scene. I understand your desire not to swap out the sky, but the eye is drawn to the lightest part of the image, which is the sky, so at least dark in after you have tone mapped it, or bring in the sky from the -2

The building and needs some geometry adjustments and I like Max's idea of getting rid of some of the left and the power lines.

Remember that DD is not a photo contest, but a way to put in images of things that you are trying out or new techniques or images that are "almost" there. The idea is not to put in your best like you might in a camera club, but rather provide images that can offer suggestions, inspiration, etc.

I edited it this way...   Posted: 02/25/2021 13:33:44

Interesting subject. Good blending and beautiful color tones. I would suggest to have a more oblique view to enhance the depth perception.   Posted: 02/28/2021 06:21:46
