Brakelights by Lisa Cuchara

August 2019 - Brakelights

About the Image(s)

I loved the juxtaposiiton of this toy car on top of the brakelight at old car city. Three exposure HDR because it was taken mid-day and I wanted some of the details like the nails to show.

Aperture: 8; Exposure mode: Av; Exposure compensation: -1; ISO: 500
Lens: OLYMPUS M.12-100mm F4.0; Focal length: 31mm; Focal length: 62mm (in 35mm film)

Details apprear clearly, as the nails you mentioned, do show well and raises my interest as to how they got placed in the obviously crashed car at that location. The dust and the old brake light details show well, as the car, drawing attention and contrast in this creatively done image.   Posted: 08/17/2019 16:29:09

Yes, I loved the DUST
and the red of the brake light was graphic for me with the blue car and white/silver items

this one was a toy car...
hundreds of real cars, but this was a toy car, not a crash :-)

Interesting, is the car always there? The texture definitely helps the image.. did you remove the color in the background?

I was hoping to go there in October but they are closed Sunday and Monday.   Posted: 08/18/2019 18:47:19

Brad, The place is chock full of photo ops! You never know what will be there next!
Tom and I are leading a workshop to Old Car City (and an abandoned denim factory and a train museum) in November. We will shoot during the day at OCC twice -- and light paint one evening. I could stay a month there and not run out of compositions and images to take.   Posted: 08/18/2019 22:58:16

No, I did not remove the color, it was just monochromatic except for the red white (silver) and blue. There is blue near the nails, and some creams and blues in the background.   Posted: 08/18/2019 22:59:24

An effective blend on an image that raises a number of questions and Max and Bard have already noted. The detail is very nice. I feel the lighting flows very naturally. The one thing I might paly with a bit is possibly burning in the lighter areas in the back above the model car a bit more (the one at the top edge over the front wheel and the one in the upper right corner in particular). I appreciate being able to see into the shadows in the lower right.   Posted: 08/18/2019 21:44:28

I agree, those areas could/should be burned in more   Posted: 08/18/2019 23:01:13
