March 2019 - Utah Statehouse 1

About the Image(s)

This is another one from the Statehouse in Salt Lake City. It is based on a five shot bracket at +/- 2 around an initial exposure of 1/25 at F 22, iso 6400 handheld using a Canon 1DX MK II and 16-35 F4 L lens at 16mm. The blend was done in Lightroom. The resulting Tiff file was then taken into DxO studio 2 (which seems to deal with the noise in Canon’s better than many alternatives) then to DxO Viewpoint 3 to fix the verticals and horizontals, and then that file was taken into Photoshop for some finishing. There is still some distortion, but I had to tip that 16 so far up that I was happy I could correct the horizontals and verticals. I’ll have to put an 11 -24 on my wish list. My biggest regret is not having stepped in enough to have separation on the chandelier, but at that point I was intent on backing up far enough to get part of the dome in. It needed a bracket to do a pano as well, but without a tripod at that point it just wasn’t going to happen.

wow, very dramatic. Very detailed description, a lot went into your image, not many people would take it that many steps, they would use one program and say "good enough"

The chandelier lights look good. Verticals look good.

The people add perspective and let you realize how tall this is.

ten stops inside and the top window light reflections are
still a tad hot

Were the steps that blue? perhaps a color blend mode and warm them up?
sharp for handheld too, yes, slight pano would have been nice LOL.   Posted: 03/09/2019 16:36:07

The steps catch the daylight coming through the overhead skylights. They didn't look as blue to the eye, but then again our eyes tend to compensate for a lot of things. You could see the bluish cast in the gray of the marble while you were there, but I have neutralized it more in other shots I made. The bracket was five shots covering a total range of +/- 2 not five shots at 2 stop intervals, so only a total range four stops. That window highlight is the red channel clipping. I debated on applying the blue channel to it in that area to try to recover some texture, but never did it.   Posted: 03/12/2019 12:42:25

Well done! You really got some nice images of the interior of that building! The composition is very strong and the few people certainly give it scale.

DxO does do a nice job with noise and their Clearview filter can also do quite a bit on the right image.   Posted: 03/22/2019 13:30:21

What can I say Rick, you did this one well. There is a blue reflection at the top of Idaho Capitol dome similar to what you have. Nothing I can say to improve this one. Great photography.   Posted: 03/25/2019 16:00:10
