Long Haired Onion by Linda M Medine

May 2020 - Long Haired Onion

About the Image(s)

When I saw this onion I thought about my hair and how long it is getting and that I need a hair cut. I took this image April 24, 2020 on my kitchen table and I used window light. I also had a flash light in the right hand corner above the onion. So, the light is coming from the front and that is window light and on the right side about a foot off the table top a standing flash light. Used a Nikon D800 full frame on a tripod, .08 sec. F8, ISO 100. I also locked the mirror up on my camera to keep the camera from shaking. I used a texture for the background.

Very nice shot of the onion Linda. I really like the depth and how your lighting brought out the texture. There is a lot of detail with the veins and breaks in the skin. I also like the bright green of the "hair" which caught my attention first and then my eye wandered to the rest of the image--it works well.
To offer a suggestion, while I like your background, I wonder if it was a bit lighter near the bottom of the onion to give it even more dimension.   Posted: 05/04/2020 08:44:29

Neat image! Would you consider cropping it down a bit? For me, with the onion in the center , it is competing with the texture.   Posted: 05/08/2020 21:01:57

Your background texture complements the onion as to color and texture. The sprout speaks volumes. Especially when compared to the onion "bulb". Very sharp. I like the lighting. Nice job.

I agree with Mark, just what I was going to say.The eye drawn to the sprout, the sharpness and background which is textured and gives a mild contrasting difference with the onion, drawing us to the new growth. Love this too. Maybe being isolated has helped most of us all focus on our close surroundings   Posted: 05/09/2020 10:36:44

I cropped it a little and lightened the bottom. Check it out. Better? Thanks for the feedback.   Posted: 05/09/2020 11:43:16

I love the colours and the texture. The crop works, though I like the first image as I feel it gives the onion room to grow into the space.   Posted: 05/21/2020 08:19:58
