About the Image(s)

I continued my effort to learn photograph restoration for my June 2020 submission to PSA DD Group 42. I worked on a photograph of my great grand parents.

Henry Blakemore
Amanda Blakemore

Scanned print out of family photograph album on EPSON PERFECTION V700 PHOTO scanner.
Image type: 48 Bit Color
Resolution: 1200 dpi
Print size: 3.95 inches by 5.59 inches
File format: .tiff
File path name: My Book (K:) > My Pictures > Ancestors > Amanda and Henry Blakemore > Ancestors – 002.tif

Opened Ancestors – 002.tif in Adobe Photoshop; resized to 72 dpi and 1200 pixels on long edge, and Saved As Amanda and Henry Blakemore - original.jpg.

Processed Ancestors – 002.tif in Topaz DeNoise AI.

Opened Ancestors - 002-denoise-denoise.tif in Adobe Photoshop.
Used Clone Stamp to repair torn print at chair cushion.
Saved As Ancestors – 002-denoise-denoise.psd

Opened Ancestors – 002-denoise-denoise.psd in Adobe Photoshop.

Used Clone Stamp to repair torn print on suit lapels.
Made several attempts to select subject, but lost selection each time due to complexity of selection corrections. I think this was made in a photographic studio because of the backdrop and carpet; therefore, a background replacement isn't needed.
Cropped uneven edges off of image.
Opened Camera Raw Filter.
Selected Profile: Monochrome and B&W Red Filter.
On Tone Curve panel, selected Strong Contrast.
Made adjustments on Basic panel.
Re-saved Ancestors – 002-denoise-denoise.psd.

PSD file type is “Not Supported” by Topaz Sharpen AI.

Re-opened Ancestors – 002-denoise-denoise.psd in Adobe Photoshop and Saved As Ancestors - 002-denoise-denoise psd.tif.

Processed Ancestors - 002-denoise-denoise psd.tif through Topaz Sharpen AI that output Ancestors - 002-denoise-denoise psd-sharpen-sharpen.tif.

Opened Ancestors - 002-denoise-denoise psd-sharpen-sharpen.tif in Adobe Photoshop and used Clone Stamp to repair torn print on background. Resized image to 72 dpi and 1200 pixels on long edge. Saved As Amanda and Henry Blakemore - Edited Rev 1-1.jpg.

Hi Keith, A great improvement, comparing with last months image. The only things I see on Amanda's skirt , a scratch mark and a small one on Henry's jacket.   Posted: 06/01/2020 09:25:44

Hi Keith,

What a fun and worthy project. I have some old photographs to restore as well. Have you considered a sepia similar to the original? The black and white, for me, is a bit harsh. The scratch marks are a bit distracting but I'm sure they can be easily removed.   Posted: 06/04/2020 22:34:15

Keith, very nice effort and you are so lucky to have old photos of your ancestors to restore. May not be perfect but certainly quite an improvement!   Posted: 06/14/2020 00:15:27

I know nothing about restoration. I admire your dedication to learning this subject.   Posted: 06/14/2020 12:25:59
