Accordion Man by Stuart Caine

October 2019 - Accordion Man

About the Image(s)

This was taken during the 2013 PSA meeting at Colorado Springs.One of the days we took a tour to The Royal Gorge. We boarded the Royal Gorge Railroad train for a lunch tour of the Royal Gorge. At the end of one of the open cards this gentleman was playing the accordion. I cropped the image and processed the image in Photoshop and in Topax Studio 2 as well as the new Topaz Sharpener program.

It was taken with my Canon T1i at: f/4.5; 1/100 sec;
ISO 125

I would take out the vertical line behind him. To see it looks over processed.   Posted: 10/03/2019 19:08:00

This is a total character portrait, complete with the Alpine hat. Nicely done.
Suggestions: it looks to me like the sharpening shows and is a bit over-done. Also, if you can include the hands of a musician, I think that would work better.   Posted: 10/04/2019 15:03:03

thanks for your comments. I feel the sharpening is coming from the new Topaz Sharpen A1, which I just received and seems to work great.   Posted: 10/07/2019 14:28:35

I should have written that to me it looks over processed.   Posted: 10/06/2019 22:14:02

Hi Michael, I don't think this is over processed. I used the new Topaz Sharpen A1. It's a great app.   Posted: 10/07/2019 08:21:47

TO me his skin does not look natural.   Posted: 10/07/2019 08:31:23

I think you have captured his character well. The hat adds so much to the story that I can't imagine him not wearing it. I have thought about the accordion and for me, its more about the portrait - so I'm good with just seeing part of it. It's a fun photo and obviously has a post processing filter. My only suggestion is to consider toning down some of the red on his forehead and remove the vertical line as Michael suggested.   Posted: 10/09/2019 22:11:59

What a nice image -- does look like a filter or perhaps over sharpening in play here.   Posted: 10/11/2019 17:23:18

I like this candid portrait. It is interesting to see what Topaz A1 does, I was considering purchasing it.   Posted: 10/13/2019 12:40:40

It's a good image of the man with just enough show of his accordion. I have Topaz Sharpen AI too and agree that it's a very good tool. However, in this instance, sorry but I tend to agree with Michael that it might be a tad too sharp. Perhaps softening a little (am thinking of Glamour Glow in Snapseed) might work.   Posted: 10/15/2019 12:44:34
