About the Image(s)

This is a photo of an extra point that was blocked. I was using a Canon 1DXll shooting at 14 frames a second and still missed the shot of his hand hitting the ball. The following shot shows the ball knocked up in the air. The lesson from this is to shoot fast sports at a very fast frame rate. I used a Canon 70-200mm lens,F4.0. I was able to get away with aperture priority as it was a day game. I used ISO 400 and the shutter speed was generally around 1/4000th. I did have a press pass so I was on the sideline at about the 20. The light was very harsh but I think the camera handled it pretty good. I downloaded to lightroom and then processed in Luminar which I find far easier to use and more subtle.

Nice one. Perhaps there was much distraction in the background, the first image that drew my attention was the player on the left and then to the right before i noticed the ball. So, yes it would have been better if the ball was nearer his hands but, that's sports and is not easy to get that perfect shot.   Posted: 10/09/2018 19:10:51

Very sharp, great action capture. I cannot keep my eyes from going to the AAA sign. Too bright and centered between the action so it is pulling me off the subject. Difficult shooting conditions.   Posted: 10/11/2018 15:48:18

Your right the camera handled the light really well. I like this as it is, though I'm not the guy to go to for this kind of photography...but the action is all in focus, the ball is easy to distinguish against that white background, and you can see the story of what is happening quite easily. All the periphery things I would imagine are normal for sports photography since you can't always choose the best background depending where they are on the field, court, or otherwise.   Posted: 10/11/2018 18:54:37

This is an appealing shot and leaves one to wonder if the block was successful. The distracting elements are understood in this shooting environment and where the ball placement ended up could not have been better although the sign itself is part of the distraction. Nice sharpness right down to the muscle definition of the players.   Posted: 10/11/2018 19:16:55

You all are correct. This is photojournalism. The back round can be blurred but it will not go away. The kick was blocked so the best impact shot was missed.   Posted: 10/11/2018 19:43:08

This is a nice photojournlism shot. You have the motion of the kicker, the ball in the air and the blocker in the air, trying to catch the ball. Great shot, sharp and a slight blur of the background makes a great picture.
