The Drummer by Jan Lightfoot

About the Image(s)

I'm experimenting with Corel Painter, but I'm not very good with it yet. This is a single image in which I "painted" everything and then brought back only the areas that I wanted to show. Still experimenting, but I'm curious to know if this sort of technique is appealing or not to you.

Jan, It looks like you already have a lot of proficiency with Corel Painter. It would have been nice to see the original image to see the magic you've done. Keep at it with this program.   Posted: 03/11/2020 18:34:12

love the placement, the swirls, the colors

please post the original

the main subject is pretty neat, the floating head on the left bothers me.

perhaps try to bring back a little of the drum too

Jan, this is appealing. I like that the drummer is sharp as is one of the other musicians in the background which helps to set the venue. I like that you have painted and muted the rest of the image so that center of interest is the drummer. And I like the emotion and excitement of the drummer showing out of the original photograph. So yes, I like this technique and want to see where you take it.

By the way I admire that you are learning Corel Painter which I do not feel skilled enough to tackle yet. And I like your Point Reyes image on your website.   Posted: 03/17/2020 11:05:57

Jan, I like what you are doing and look forward to you exploring more.
I agree with Lisa about the "floating head" and don't think you need him in this photo.
I also would like to see the original just for comparison.
I really like the movement you've created with your brush strokes!   Posted: 03/18/2020 14:23:50
