About the Image(s)

After a recent visit to the Newport Aquarium in Oregon, I thought it would be fun to make another outer space composite, so I took another background image from an iPhone shot of a scene from the Natural History Museum in Salt Lake City and then just kept adding things. There are 17 layers and I used the Quick Selection tool and the pen tool to cut out most of the fish and stuck them into a blend of two different water images. I then used different blend modes on the creatures, brought in the starry sky layer and used a green/red/blue gradient on it. I found an image from a few years ago to make the "fire" coming out of the "volcano". For me, this image is more of an impression, and not necessarily true to perspective. In other words, definitely not real looking, lol.

Jan, I really like what you've done with this composition. The colors are wonderful and the theme is fun. As you may have guessed from my photos and comments over time, I tend to prefer less clutter in my images. This image is really strong. I wonder if it would be even stronger if there were a few less foreground elements.   Posted: 11/12/2019 13:07:29

Thanks Brad, I continued to work on this image after submitting this version and it did get a little better.   Posted: 11/19/2019 22:25:28

I love this Jan!!

To me, this doesn't feel cluttered or uncomfortable so I am the other perspective from Brad, lol!

I love the colors, the concept and the composition.

My only thought might be to take that string of tree lights and expand them to the entire photo so they look like bubbles coming up from the ocean floor.

Jan, 17 layers seems an intense task to me. I like this. To me it is like being in the bottom of the ocean where a volcano is bursting forth. I will dream about it tonight.   Posted: 11/13/2019 19:19:14

very cool! The red lit tress as lava fie is wonderful!

I like how you included an iphone portion as well, we always have our cell phone with us so why not incorporate more from those images.

The water ripples are a good addition, really ties it all.

I like all of the critters in the foreground. The only area I think is a tad cluttered is the very left with all of the plants.

As fas as improving, reduce not a lot - it really flows (pun intended)
-- the opacity of the jellyfish on the right, seems like it would be more transparaent in "reality" LOL
-- the white urchin thingy in the left top seems too bright to me, the viewers eyes are drawn to the brightest thing. I like it there -- I just don't think that it should be the enter of interest. Also seems like it would have a little red color cast from all of the fire and volcano

Thanks Lisa, I agree with you about the urchin creature, he's a little hot. (haha) The jellyfish were interesting though, they were all very
bright white, so I just tried tinting him a softer color. My second version worked a little better. BTW, most of the plants are actually pipe fish.   Posted: 11/19/2019 22:32:52
