About the Image(s)

How I did It:

I wanted an image capturing the fall colors of northern Minnesota but not a path lined with fall colored leaves.

I photographed hand held with my Canon EOS 5D Sr and 24-105 lens an interesting vine growing up the face of a retaining wall. In PS CC Camera Raw I cleaned up the image and cropped it. Then I took the file into Topaz>Simplify and played around with variations, I think ending with the Cartoon Boost-Edgy 2. I used the Topaz layer as the background and the cleaned up PS file as a layer above it. I reduced the opacity of the PS file. I also did some burning and dodging on the final file to make it more interesting. The result is an impressionistic image using fall colors but not the usual fall leaves scene.

I would like to make the edges softer -perhaps using some painting brushes?

What do you think and what suggestions/changes would you do?

I think it looks great. I really love the mix of the colours.
Reading how you achieved this sounds quite complicated, but you got such a great result so I'm sure it was well worth the effort.
The difference between the original and the resulting image is amazing.
I haven't used the topaz filters although I do have some.
I actually really like how the top left and bottom right have harder edges, to me this really works.   Posted: 10/05/2018 19:36:41

Henry, This is a successful transformation of the original which has a beautiful abstract quality. I wonder if adding some black accents might give a boost to the contrast and make the colors even more vibrant.   Posted: 10/05/2018 20:07:08

Brad, adding some black accents is a good suggestion which I will have to try.   Posted: 10/10/2018 19:20:36

I lie and agree with that suggestion   Posted: 10/24/2018 23:46:58

Henry,
I really like your new interpretation for a fall picture.

Any suggestion I have would have to be based on what you want to do with this. Is it a background graphic for a greeting card? A stand alone impression depiction of FALL?

The yellow leaves in the middle are very bright. I'd like to see them toned down and masked a bit for more definition. Just a personal preference.   Posted: 10/11/2018 12:44:39

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for your comments. Your suggestion for toning down the yellow leaves is good. This is a stand along impression of fall and part of my efforts to get away from straight photographs and become more artistic, in this case playing with filters. I have printed it as a stand alone 20x30 print which is on an easel in our living room so I can examine it daily and get additional comments from visitors. The print is held with clips to a piece of white foam core so as I print, I can put up new images very simply and easily.   Posted: 10/13/2018 11:44:54

what a good strong abstract from the original scene. The green is not even in those areas.
A bit of selective color or levels or curves to make the blacks pop. Also tone down the UL and LR bring areas so our eye stays on the pattern   Posted: 10/24/2018 23:48:42
