Rock Fishing by Julie Deer

June 2020 - Rock Fishing

About the Image(s)

My photo is called Rock Fishing. It was taken as the sun was going down and the tide was coming in. I worried for the safety of the fisherman, but he seemed oblivious to any danger. Being in a Gulf, we don't tend to get much large waves or swell. I left just after taking this image, so don't know what trouble he had getting back to the shore. I look forward to your comments on how to improve this image.

I love this image! This really appeals to my graphic design background. Love the backlighting and silhouetting of the fisherman. By choosing to not place the subject in the center, makes it a stronger image. The warm tones work well. Nice shot!   Posted: 06/07/2020 13:22:23

Beautiful sunset image. No suggestions for improvement necessary   Posted: 06/12/2020 17:00:08

Hi Julie, It's a beautiful image. A good silhouette is the ideal we are all chasing, and you got it with this one. I see good use of thirds, good use of foreground, middle ground, and background, beautiful contrast in textures, good choice for a silhouette image.
Did you do any editing to the photo? Is there an original that is rather different from what you ended up with? I'm very interested in your process, including your settings.   Posted: 06/13/2020 08:34:14

Hi Alison, Thanks for your comments. This photo was taken at 1/60th second, F2.8, ISO 100. The original was very much the same as the final product. After cropping, I did increase the saturation plus increased the red, orange and yellow colours as well as the colour temperature. I increased the clarity plus I dropped the highlights and increased the shadows. I also increased the black level. Thanks for taking me back to the beginning! I had forgotten what the image looked like before I started fiddling!   Posted: 06/13/2020 18:02:01

Julie, this is a nice moody silhouette image of a fisherman doing what he loves to do. Would you consider cropping off some of the left side so the fisherman is less in the center?   Posted: 06/15/2020 09:59:23

Thanks for your idea Henry, I will have a play and crop some off to see what it looks like.   Posted: 06/15/2020 18:50:34

Thanks Jamie. I really did wonder how the fisherman was going to get off the rocks safely because the tide was coming in, but I guess they had done this before and knew what they were doing.   Posted: 06/16/2020 20:26:13

Nice detail in the fisherman's accessories - looks sharp. Positioning could be on a third but in the centre is fine. For me, the vibrance of the orange sky is a bit much, it doesn't look natural (compare with the sky in the original).   Posted: 06/25/2020 09:24:05

Really good silhouette with no overlapping parts. I do think such a bold color in the sky is surreal.   Posted: 06/25/2020 15:37:44

I'm on the long drive from Florida to NH, and the sky is almost this color, during the day, because of the Saharan Dust Cloud. Can't wait to get past GA and get away from it. I hope none of you are in its path. Definitely makes breathing more difficult.   Posted: 06/28/2020 07:09:45
