About the Image(s)

I photographed this pelican across the river on a foggy morning. I have removed some of the distracting elements in the background. I like the muted tones of this photograph, what do you think?

I love this image. You took out the right things, it improved the composition.
I think it might be a little too muted. The original image is very small, but I think the contrast between the green of the bushes behind the triangular tree shape did add something. Just a thought.   Posted: 03/08/2020 14:43:50

I agree its soft but that comes with the weather and time of day. Perhaps it could do with a touch more vibrance and contrast, though. I think the reflections are pleasant and the triangular tree behind the bird is interesting.
Have you thought of cropping off the right hand side and making it more of a square? That would put the pelican more on a third and slightly larger in the frame.   Posted: 03/15/2020 09:09:21

Julie, you have captured the essence of a foggy morning and a pelican surveying its domain. Appealing to me is that the pelican and the stump are to the left of center. Wonderful!

Now I wonder if you cropped more off the bottom, would it improve or degrade the overall effect. You would lose some of the reflection of the stump and branches but it would bring the pelican closer and make the pelican and stump more prominent. It would also lower the shoreline from its mid-center position.

Now I have read the comments of Alison and Andrew in which Andrew advocates a more square image. I think it wonderful how we all have individual artistic preferences. There is no right answer.   Posted: 03/15/2020 15:38:39

I love it!!!!! The mood is perfect. I wouldn't change it at all.   Posted: 03/16/2020 12:01:17

Thank you all for your comments.

I've changed the image by flipping it horizontally and changing it to a portrait orientation which brings the pelican closer.   Posted: 03/18/2020 00:45:43

I love fog and muted. I really like the original composition the best. I think there is enough contrast for a nature shot.   Posted: 03/18/2020 14:11:04
