Rain Racer 177 by Andrew Hersom, APSA, EPSA, EFIAP

November 2019 - Rain Racer 177

About the Image(s)

This was shot during a rainstorm at a vintage motorcycle race in Lincolnshire. Despite the weather the bikers continued riding and didn't seem to slow down.
This was taken using a 300mm lens & 1.4x convertor at 1/640s f5.6 ISO 800. I like his eyes but don't much care for the messy background. It might work better in black and white.

I like this image which captures the venue, captures the intensity of the rider and is sharp. personally I would like to darken the white spot behind the helmet so that it would not detract. I usually prefer color and do so in this case. Nice work!   Posted: 11/13/2019 18:18:52

I agree wth Henry, color works in this shot. I focus on the eyes when I look at the rider. He seems to be studying the conditions. The busyness you mentioned doesn't bother me as I think that's part of event! Nice!   Posted: 11/16/2019 06:31:45

To me this is a very nice image of a motorbike rider. I like how you have managed to capture a richness of colour on what is clearly a dismal day. For my eye, the focus is sharp across the entire subject, capturing he intense look on the riders face. The image does leave me wishing I could see a little more of the bike in the bottom of the image.   Posted: 11/18/2019 00:26:37

A very powerful image. It's fantastic to me that you were able to get the rain so clearly!
I agree with everyone above, this picture is meant to be color. I do wish it wasn't cropped quite so tight-would like to see more of his helmet as well as more of his legs.
Some playing with sliders to deepen the blacks might help.
You captured a great storytelling moment with this one!   Posted: 11/19/2019 03:56:58

I really like the geometric color blocks for the background and nice to get the lighter background around the darker image. Can't believe the rain is so crisp!   Posted: 11/19/2019 15:47:05
