About the Image(s)

This photos was taken of a lone seagull waiting patiently on a jetty for the boats to come in, hoping for some fish scraps. The weather was freezing and the picture was taken mid afternoon.
Edited in Lightroom & Photoshop. I adjusted the temperature, contrast & vibrance and straightened the horizon. Also did some work with curves & masks.

Camera: Canon 5D MarkIV
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM
Exposure: 1/1600sec at f/2.8, ISO 200, 70mm

Hi Moira. I love the picture of this little guy. And the story you are aiming for is a good one. Great combination of textures with his feathers, the wood pylon, and the water the in background.
I think the white on the bird might have gotten overbrightened just a little bit. The tiniest bit.
But the most important change I would suggest is a very simple one. Crop out almost all of the yacht. The yacht is so huge and ponderous in the frame. Just leave a bit of it, in other words just leave a little space behind the bird's tail. The effect this crop will have is that the bird is then decentered, and the story is less about "pretty bird" and more about where the bird is looking at, which helps tell the story of his expectation.   Posted: 10/09/2019 06:04:35

Hi Alison. Thank you, I have tried your suggestion and I agree that it makes a difference.   Posted: 10/09/2019 17:02:22

Moria, this is a lovely capture of a gull waiting for fishing boats to bring it scraps. The eye is sharp and the background is muted.

I wondered whether cropping in closer to the gull would improve the image so I tried it as seen below. It works but the setting of the gull is lost so I don't think that is the way to go. Your version is the best!

I loved the bird before some of the changes were made. It seemed a bit busy, but after the cropping was done, the bird popped and became the main focus. Well done...the bird is crisp and the eye is a focal point.   Posted: 10/19/2019 06:51:51

Nice sharp image of the bird (is it a NZ black-billed gull?). I am not sure I "get" the waiting with intent title - I think that would work better if something like a fishing boat was in view on the right hand side of the picture.
I might be tempted to crop the left hand jetty off.   Posted: 10/19/2019 08:01:07
