About the Image(s)

Taken this fall. When out walking I noticed some great leaves with great colors, shapes and texture, I picked up many of them to shoot later. They dry out fast so to get the them so I can stage them I soak them in water. I set them up on a card table, I stick a straight pin in the stem and then using hand clamps I set them up with a flashlight behind them to backlight them. It takes some fiddling to get them setup right with the light. After this one, I found it is impossible to get the whole leaf in focus so I have started focus stacking.

Taken with a Lumix GX8 an Olympus 60mm macro lens at f/2.8, ISO 200 and 1/13th sec.

Processed in Lightroom and the Basic panel then in Silver Effects Pro 2 using the Full Dynamic Smooth and Sepia 20.

Very interesting image and indeed has an arty feel. Its all shapes and lines and the contemporary feel makes one ponder and look deeper at the image due to its strong compo. I feel the right is a bit large and getting negative. So my suggestion would be to decrease the spatial on the right to give it more balance as the line below does not curve all the way to justify the space. Still very interesting. Good light to you Dave.   Posted: 12/02/2019 15:31:00

This was a mistake, I accidentally put this in both November and December, I will be posting a different image for December.   Posted: 12/06/2019 13:53:30

I sure like the B/W rendering over the color. Great set-up and results.   Posted: 12/12/2019 09:00:54

I note the image has changed and Dave has corrected. As Vincent has indicated my comment showing here is for the November image.
My comment for the December image - Falling Leaves of Fall.
Let me admit I love fall colors and coincidentally, I have travelled to many European countries during fall. Lucky to have captured the colors of fall. The light is tricky but the color saturation is awesome. Coming to this image, I like the concept and the different approach here. But I have concerns why does the leaf end at its tip in this way. Is there a real intent, I am not sure. I note the depth of field in the lower half of the leaf weak. There is beautiful details of the veins in the upper half but fuzzy at the lower part. I would have preferred the depth of field to take in the entire leaf. I like the tone and feel the square format justifies the content.   Posted: 12/12/2019 13:24:42

Arfan, it is a natural tip but out of focus. I agree the complete leaf needs to be in focus. I noticed after taking a few that I was not able to get a whole leaf in focus so I decided to focus stack going forward.   Posted: 12/13/2019 12:51:12

The detail you have captured on the top of the leaf is very strong and shows off the veins and lines of the leaf. I like the tone you have chosen. It's a real shame you had not to notice that the whole leaf is not focused throughout as that does hurt the balance and I would like to see a stacked version.
There is a gentleman over here on the camera circuit that does these types of images a lot and he does a lot of them with backlighting with some amazing effects. Just an idea for you to play with.   Posted: 12/15/2019 14:49:29

Wonderful images. I think you could have a small business selling colored leaves to your old friends in the desert.   Posted: 12/18/2019 01:10:06

Good idea and good job David.
I like both version (the hue is great in the color version).
For the low deph of field (an the lack of sharpness on the right and in the bottom), i find it quite interesting.
Full sharp would have been beautiful, but may be a little monotonus.
In this case, ther is a dynamism and it is ok.
