Fisherman Cottages, Island of the Blessed. by Paul Hoffman

July 2017 - Fisherman Cottages, Island of the Blessed.

About the Image(s)

Sony A77, Sigma DT18-35 1.8 ART @ 18mm ISO100.
1/200sec F11 UV POL 2stop ND Grad filter.

These are the four old fisher cottages on the Island of the Blessed, Llanddwyn, Anglesey. Now holiday cottages. Good holiday cottages as they are about six miles from the car park, so you would need to plan your stay. This is situated on the south-east corner of this Welsh island and is a photographer’s gem. Just such a long hard walk for someone like me who finds it hard to walk down the road. But I made the 12 mile round trip and it was worth all the pain. Cannot recommend it enough if you happen to visit North Wales.
Processed in Lightroom and converted in PS CC2017. Used Luminosity mask (TKV5 panel) to adjust tones colour using curves layers, added a touch of contrast, all using luminosity masks. Then converted to mono and then did small tonal adjustments to specific areas, i.e. side of first house, sky, edge of grass and other brighter areas with Luminosity mask and curves. Added a smart sharpen to cottages and grass but mask sky. Hope you enjoy.

Makes me want to be there, not sure of the 12 mile hike though. This image is very strong, the tones, contrast and detail are top notch. The angle of the composition is very good. The clouds are a bonus. I also like the great foreground, it really makes the image. I would only add a little light the the window areas along the front of the building. Very tasteful use of Luminosity masks Paul. I have the TK materials and need to read and try them out. For sure after seeing this image and others that you have been showing. Any learning materials that you would recommend to me. Jerry   Posted: 07/03/2017 13:13:50

I would go to You Tube, look up Nick Page who is a very good American photographer and has just done a review of all the Luminosity Mask options out there. I would say Tony Kyper as he is by far the best at it, but there are a couple coming up fast. So I would start there to see which you think would suit your work flow the best.   Posted: 07/04/2017 06:30:49

Are we in need to get some new members for this group as we do seem to be very light.   Posted: 07/04/2017 06:39:43

Good for you for making that long hike, it was well worth it. Love the angle of the shot, the sky and the foreground (maybe it's a little heavy on the bottom right) and especially the lane that leads out into the distance. Thanks for the luminosity tips, I'm going to following up on them.   Posted: 07/15/2017 02:05:40

What a wonderful shot - well worth the walk! Hopefully we will see more taken on that shoot. There is an enchanting contrast between the hard geometric buildings and the gentle flowing grasses. The lighting is point on and the clouds set the scene off. So nice!   Posted: 07/16/2017 18:49:04
