Making of Chhau Dance Masks by Sunandan Ghosh

April 2021 - Making of Chhau Dance Masks

About the Image(s)

It was my collection in the month of March, 2021 from a distant village of Purulia district in the state of West Bengal, India. It is an image of making of Chhau dance masks, a traditional cultural heritage of Purulia district. Chhau is a folk dance delineating mythological stories. Materials used for masks are clay, soft paper, diluted glue, cloth, mud, fine ash powder etc. My Camera was Canon EOS 80D with ISO 200; Aperture f/6.3 and Shutter speed 1/125.
Expecting suggestions from my friends.

Sunandan, you have a winner. I would enter this image in a PTD salon I'm sure that it will do egregiously. I try to tone down the image a little bit, I think that it was a bit oversaturated. I like this image very much. Great job Sunandan.   Posted: 04/06/2021 16:34:15

I think this a good story telling image with great detail. I would crop it to focus more on the subject and his work. I would also tone down the green in the wall.   Posted: 04/07/2021 22:58:43

Thank you Art. I always appreciate your suggestions. Here I slightly differ. You are recomposing the image to present it in the category of Pictorial photography. I deliberately added other masks and trifle materials to depict the environment of the artist as per guideline of PSA course on Travel photography. Even I have taken images with different composition showing three masks and the hands of the creator. But it would not come in the category of Travel photography. In fact now I am a student of on line course of PSA on advanced Travel Photography. Regards to all my dear friends for open minded suggestions. 😻   Posted: 04/08/2021 03:24:17

Of course you are correct about not making major changes when entering an image in the travel category. I still think that a tighter crop and bringing out some details in the shadows using RAW would make it stronger but that is my taste.   Posted: 04/09/2021 21:54:37

My thoughts are with Art. It's a matter of personal taste. If the rules call for more context to fit a category, so be it.   Posted: 04/08/2021 08:09:41

Sunandan, I think this is a very good image and fits the guidelines you have chosen for Travel photography. The only suggestion I have to offer would be to tone down the red on the man's head and also the door? behind him. Plus the green on the walls. I feel this will automatically bring out more of the rich colors in the masks. I like this picture a lot!   Posted: 04/11/2021 12:37:01
