I just had to comment on this image. I love just about everything about it. I love the balance and symmetry of the landscape balanced against the three boats lined up in the water. Each boat has separation leading my eyes back to a beautiful reflection of so many soft pastels. To me the sky is interesting but not distracting and the foliage is a feast for my eyes. I love this image. My only suggestion (as minor and biased as it is) would be to crop just enough from the bottom to balance the space in front of the boats with the space occupied by the sky. Absolutely beautiful.   Posted: 11/07/2020 18:00:02

Kurtis, thank you for your critique. Your revised edit, cropping a bit off the bottom, made a noticeable improvement in the picture.
Am appreciative of your kind words!   Posted: 11/07/2020 19:08:46

I like the perspective and the composition. For me, it is a bit to tranquil but that is me. I agree with Kurtis about a tighter crop but I like more contrast and drama. I see some fringing around trees where they meet the sky. I used the blur tool to remove it.   Posted: 11/07/2020 21:35:45

Art, thank you for catching the fringing around the trees, I missed that. Did you use a gold filter on the photo, it does make the image look more intriguing. Thanks!   Posted: 11/26/2020 13:22:26

Sylvia, I must compliment you for a unique and excellent image. It doesn't mean anything the fact that you took this image with an iPhone, even it was a shoe box it was always a good image. And I think that you should enter this image in some contests, at least you can start collecting acceptances. Personally I like better the original image. There's the contrast between the action in the sky and the calm of the lake, and it is striking. And that's to me is the beauty of this image. An image that tells you the story in a very strong manner without adding or taking away anything. Perfect focus, excellent tonal range. Be careful with cropping, I already told you that to me the original image looks better than the final image. The original has more breathing room and that's important for the balance of the composition. Good job Sylvia.   Posted: 11/08/2020 02:19:39

Gabriele, Interestingly, I debated whether or not to crop out part of the sky because I see some drama and beauty there. Think when I redo this, the sky and part of the bottom will be added back. Thank you for your thoughts and also encouragement to start entering some contests!   Posted: 11/26/2020 13:31:05

Syliva, I love this photo. The colors of fall are just beautiful. The cold sky and the warm trees are a great contrast. Once again I prefer this photo to be a panorama.
What do you think?

Hi Marge, yes you are right. With the colors in the trees and stormy sky this could work as a panorama. Actually, I cropped off a pier and house on the sides which might be interesting. Thanks Marge!   Posted: 11/26/2020 13:38:41

Sylvia, I really like the HDR effect you achieved with Nik Color Efex. Can you describe which filters you used to get such a delightful photo?   Posted: 11/16/2020 21:57:21

Hi Alan, Here are the filters used in PhotoShop and Nik.
PS/Camera Raw: Basic/"auto" + adjust sliders; Color Mixer - desaturate some fall colors, then Luminance

Nik/Color Efex Pro 4: Detail extractor, High Key, Darken/Lighten Center

Hope this helps!   Posted: 11/24/2020 07:35:33

Thank you. I use Detail Extractor a lot, and High Key sparingly. I'll revisit it soon. I'll also investigate Darken/Lighten. I have seen others' "About the Images" comments who have used Luminance, but I was unable to find it, even with Google's help. I found it under Color Mixer as you said. Thank you again for the road map. I'm sure to have fun soon.   Posted: 11/24/2020 08:19:32

Alan, you mentioned you were looking for Luminance, I found this tutorial in phlearn.com: Better Than HDR-Master Luminosity Masks in PS. It probably is not what you are looking for but thought I'd mention it. Have fun with your photo art!   Posted: 11/26/2020 09:41:05

I have a subscription to Phlearn but haven't searched the site for Luminance. Thanks for the heads up. I use all the help I can get.   Posted: 11/26/2020 10:38:16

I just read your PID bio and saw that you live in SC. I was born and raised in Anderson SC, as far away from you as you can get and still be in SC. The only time I've been back is when my wife and I drive on I-95 from NJ to Sanibel Island.   Posted: 11/26/2020 10:42:47

Sylvia , It is a beautiful picture . A winning picture in a competition for sure . Everything is there , composition , creativity and The Three Boats ( the cherry on the cake) .
I like the way the colors pop up on the grey sky, water , houses and boats . I also like the panorama cropping . Nothing to add. Congrats !   Posted: 11/23/2020 16:59:10
