Goodbye Summer by Marge Barham

November 2020 - Goodbye Summer

About the Image(s)

My photo was taken at McKee Gardens in Vero Beach a few years ago. For an unplanned trip there it was great to find lots of art glass figures throughout the gardens. These fun skinny figures just make me smile. It was a total surprise to find the snake in the photo too. I had my old Canon 60D camera and my settings were 100mm, f5.6, 1/350 and ISO 400. I darkened the photo a bit and sharpened it a bit.

I have been to McKee Gardens when they have their water lily competition. Their sculptures are great. I like the story. For me, helping the sculpture to stand out from the background would improve the image. I cropped it a bit and made the colors warmer to convey autumn rather than green which to me says spring.   Posted: 11/06/2020 17:31:26

Thank you Art. I do love the warmer tones and how the figure is now brighter and stand out much better.   Posted: 11/15/2020 16:33:44

What an interesting photograph. I think you did a really nice job with the highlights. To me the hint of orange accents the green foliage reflection. For me there isn't enough space above the figure with so much along the bottom. I'd personally like to see a balance by cropping up to just below the snake (nice accidental touch of interest). For me the snake provides enough that you don't need the little bit of figure reflection since you don't have very much anyway. In my opinion the whole image, as nice as it is, could benefit from a vignette. Very nice.   Posted: 11/07/2020 18:16:45

Thank you Keith. I was trying to keep as much of the reflection as I could. Not having the entire reflection in my photo it makes more sense cropping it on the bottom. But the snake is on the left rear corner of the rock. Glad he is still in the photo. LOL.

Oops. My bad. Now I see it but I still think the crop would work. You'd be surprised how many people make that name mistake. My mom wanted to name me Keith but that was also an old boyfriend's name and dad said no. LOL.   Posted: 11/16/2020 17:45:19

I really like your image, Marge and like the way Kurtis edited it. I love the reflection behind the solitary subject, such a nice contrast. For fun, I added more space at the top to give the figure more room.(PS) Then, used Darken/Lighten center to put more emphasis on the subject.(Nik) A great picture!   Posted: 11/23/2020 15:48:35

Thank you Sylvia. The added space on the top makes a world of difference to the entire photo. Good thinking.
