Windy day at the Skokie Lagoons by Howard Frank

November 2020 - Windy day at the Skokie Lagoons

About the Image(s)

I was out shooting landscapes for a class assignment this spring and wandered over to one of our local forest preserves. I liked the the movement of the trees and the reflections in the water. (The movement was helped along a bit by a filter in Topaz Studio 2. Taken with my Nikon D850 and Tamron 28 to 300 lens at ISO 64, 1/60th of a second at f/16 and 55mm.

Is that ice near the shoreline? The sweeping lines within the reflection don't appeal to me in what would otherwise be a lovely, cold, wintery-looking landscape.   Posted: 11/15/2020 12:54:12

Hi Helen,
It's actually a spring picture and the wind is blowing.   Posted: 11/15/2020 14:16:28

The tree tops accentuate the wind and the reflection in the water illuminates the movement. Overall the image has a surreal feeling that reminds me of a fine painting. Beautifully done.   Posted: 11/15/2020 19:56:41

Capturing motion in a still image is something I need more skill in. I'm interested in your approach as there is some intriguing 'brush like' strokes in the water, but not so much in the trees. I'm wondering what a much longer exposure would produce in terms of blur and sense of motion. Would our group entertain dedicating one month to experiments in capturing motion?   Posted: 11/20/2020 18:46:24

Beautiful capture. The photo looks like an oil painting. The colors, the reflection and the branches of the trees are wonderful. Well done.   Posted: 11/23/2020 22:52:07
