Saltmarsh by Ham Hayes

September 2020 - Saltmarsh

About the Image(s)

Taken on a foggy January morning in the delta of the Skagit River, Washington. I wanted to capture the mystical interplay of light with form of a world born anew.
D7100, ISO 800, 1/1000s, f/5, 82mm. Post processing included highlight reduction to more clearly define the solar disk, a slight increase in color saturation, and cropping the right edge of the frame.

Very nice photo. Gives an eerie feeling with the sun and the fog. The horizon is barely visible and provides greater depth to the image. Very nice.   Posted: 09/17/2020 18:25:18

I like your shot, but I would have tried it with a slow shutter speed.   Posted: 09/18/2020 02:21:32

Yes, the shutter speed. I was expecting a flight of Snow Geese at the time. I shoot in manual mode and had preset the higher shutter speed for that possibility. A good example of planning for one condition and having another pop up :-)   Posted: 09/19/2020 13:00:11

First, Ham, I appreciate that you really study our images, consider many aspects, and give thought full critiques. Your saltmarsh grew on me. It is mysterious with its golden sun-lighting, fog, and ambiguous horizon line. The form in front is mysterious, too, and is a necessary feature to the composition.   Posted: 09/24/2020 17:42:18
