Sundown at the Garden by Howard Frank

September 2020 - Sundown at the Garden

About the Image(s)

One of my favorite places to shoot is at the Chicago Botanic Garden. We were there at sundown a couple of weeks ago and I had to get into position to take this 5 shot HDR image. Taken with my Nikon D500 and Tamron 28 to 300 lens at F8, ISO 400 and 42mm.

Very effective use of HDR to get detail everywhere without being over the top. Love the complementary colors with the flames reaching into the image and just a bit in the water. I don't think you need the front grass to anchor the image. Initially thought you could crop out the left third, but it's necessary for balance. Looks like a Japanese area of the garden? Exquisite. Would like to visit on our next trip to Chicago, which wilI not be in October as originally planned.   Posted: 09/06/2020 17:53:36

The detail provides a nice compliment to the "greens" in the photo which makes the sunset even more dramatic. I also, like the reflections in the water.   Posted: 09/17/2020 19:34:38

To me its a nice shot, I would have included more of the area of setting sun. Nice composition.   Posted: 09/18/2020 03:15:06

The level of detail, sharpness and tonal balance really bring out the interplay of sky, trees and water. I'm really drawn to the complexity of those relationships. A suggestion that there is too much of the sky at the top of the image and the foreground grass takes away from the power of the water/tree interaction. Perhaps some top and bottom cropping would raise the impact. Very nice image!!   Posted: 09/19/2020 11:20:51
