Black Kite with a Catch by Subhash Sapru, APSA, PPSA

June 2020 - Black Kite with a Catch

About the Image(s)

The image was made two days ago at the local lake where I saw a few kites diving to get their prey. I shot it with Nikon D500 and Nikon 200-500 mm f/5.6. It was interesting to watch such actions and I made a few more shots. I down loaded the image and improved with levels.

Another excellent BIF image! We only have two varieties of Kites in Western North America, so it is interesting see to see different species. Excellent technical work and composition. I'm interested in your camera settings as I also have the D500.   Posted: 06/16/2020 18:29:23

You are welcome to the group, Ham Hayes. I thank you for your observations about my image. The image was made during a cloudy morning on Manual Mode with Shutter speed 1/1250, Aperture f/5.6 and ISO 1600. Nikon D500 equipped with Nikon 200-500 mm was hand held.   Posted: 06/18/2020 05:18:57

Thank you Subhash. I use a similar configuration and settings for my BIFs. I'm in search of Owl in flight subjects which means lower light levels in many cases, so I'm exploring the upper ISO capabilities of the D500. Will be happy to share info if it's of interest.   Posted: 06/18/2020 17:51:41

Very nicely done - nice and sharp, and good exposure. The background is nicely muted, although it appears to have some noise. I also like the somewhat unique posture of this bird in flight.   Posted: 06/20/2020 09:14:14

Welcome to our group, Ham. This is an interesting bird, well captured with his catch and good D of F. I will look forward to your excellent bird images as I've never done them.   Posted: 06/22/2020 00:36:24

Wonderful capture of a bird in flight. It is a difficult capture. Good texture and detail. Perhaps brightening the area around the eye a bit would make it even better.   Posted: 06/22/2020 14:04:56

Great capture of the bird in flight. Good detail and sharpness. I agree with Howard. The eye area of the bird is a little dark. You can try to brighten up the area around the eye a bit.   Posted: 06/24/2020 15:53:20
