Hong Kong Skyline by Peter Cheung

November 2019 - Hong Kong Skyline

About the Image(s)

The picture was taken from Victoria harbor of Hong Kong during sunset when I visited Hong Kong last month. Hong Kong Skyline is reputed as one of the most beautiful skylines in the world. Unfortunately there was some haze on the harbor because of pollution that made the skyline not as clear. The camera settings are: Nikon D810, Nikon 18-35mm, 18mm, f/13, 1/1250 sec, iso-400. In post-processing I need to adjust the perspective due to wide-angle, lightened up the shadow and darken the highlight of the sky.

A restful scene, but perhaps the whole thing could be brighter without blowing out the sky, or by using a gradient.
My eyes move back and forth from the lovely sky to the boat. Could you have moved to the left to capture it more directly beneath the bright clouds ? Or, if it wasn't anchored, perhaps you could have waited for better alignment.   Posted: 11/06/2019 16:03:46

What a beautiful scenic image. Love the colours throughout, especially the contrast of the boat, the skyline, and the sky. Unfortunately the haze eliminated the details in the buildings - but not a huge deal. I'm just learning to use Topaz Studio, and they have a De-Hazing filter which I've used a couple of times, and it would eliminate quite a bit of the haze. I would also suggest flipping the picture to have the boat go left-to-right, which I find more attractive. Suspect, you would have preferred more room in front of the boat, but one-gets-what-one-gets for these situations.   Posted: 11/17/2019 11:43:37

Nice, calming image. The fog mutes the background to help the eye focus on the boat. Wonderful sky. Have you tried the dehaze filter in Lightroom?   Posted: 11/17/2019 12:21:37

What a great capture.Although the haze is making its impact felt yet the golden sky and the boat are so dominating that the composition looks very beautiful. Well done despite haze.
Once a seasoned photographer had told me that haze or fog should not be considered enemy of the photographer. These should be basically used to minimise distractions.   Posted: 11/19/2019 08:17:42
