Teal Family at Sunset by Grace Bryant, QPSA

January 2018 - Teal Family at Sunset

About the Image(s)

This image was shot during my search for a different location at which to take sunsets. I was fortunate to have this family of Chestnut Teals move along the lake shoreline to their roosting place with the sun behind them. Canon 5DIII, lens 100-400 @ 271mm, 1/100sec, f5, iso 100.

You captured the sunset reflection on the water very nicely, and the ducks are right in the midst of the change in the reflections. This picture cries "panorama" to me (to accentuate 'movement'), so I would be tempted to chop a bit off the top and bottom, but being careful not to have the ducks right in the middle.   Posted: 01/15/2018 11:48:49

To me its a nice composition shot against sunlight, but my eyes look for details in birds.   Posted: 01/16/2018 09:09:50

nice color and reflections in the water. I agree with Subhash so I brought the image into Lightroom and used the adjustment brush to bring a little detail into the ducks. Your thoughts?   Posted: 01/16/2018 10:55:22

The ducks are meant to be a silhouette, I could have added exposure compensation to bring out the details in the family.   Posted: 01/26/2018 01:14:02

Very nice sunset colors and reflection of the sunset light. I agree with Subhash and Howard. The ducks are too dark and need more details.   Posted: 01/17/2018 00:42:19

Nice sunset colours in the water, the dark shapes of the ducks work well with the ripples. They are arranged in an interesting group with small and large interspersed......I think there is a bit too much water with not much in it at the bottom, the space is almost the same size as the colourful space at the top.   Posted: 01/18/2018 14:30:05

I agree with the above comments on the reflections, cropping and positioning of the birds. I like Howard's enhancement of the ducks' details. Or, if they had not overlapped, they could have been completely silhouetted.   Posted: 01/25/2018 22:39:01
