Bandon Beach from Above by Helen Sweet

July 2017 - Bandon Beach from Above

About the Image(s)

Last summer, in a workshop with Russ Burden, we photographed the Southern Oregon Coast, a photographer's paradise with lots of amazing views. In Bandon, approaching the long, steep stairway down to the beach, I spotted this view in the late afternoon. Especially liking the light and the high water marks on the sea stacks and the leading lines of foam, I captured it with my Sony a6300, at 52mm, f/6.3, 1/125sec. I'm not sure what post processing I had done on it previously. Now I filled in the areas which straightening left blank, removed spots from dust on my sensor, slightly saturated, vignetted and added a stroke.

I feel this has been well seen and well caught. The waves lead my eye from the foreground throughout the whole scene to the background. The rock elements are strategically placed to maintain my interest within the image. The highlights of the golden light blend well with the colours of the scene.   Posted: 07/08/2017 00:57:24

Thank you, Grace. This seemed to have more of a green cast when I entered it at my club last week. Nonetheless, the judge liked it.   Posted: 07/09/2017 19:24:34

This is a great image. I love the color. I love the sense of movement. I love how I am led from where you eye enters down the beach. Just curious: Did you make any images that are in the landscape format? What difference did it make to your sense of movement?   Posted: 07/10/2017 14:21:08

Thank you Theresa. I've looked thru my shots from that trip and can't even locate this version much less a landscape one. I usually shoot both. However, I suspect that just standing on the road above, it spoke to me as a vertical.   Posted: 07/12/2017 16:39:44

Another beautiful scenic. Great composition and exposure and sharpness. The leading lines work extremely well in this shot. So much to see , but as I view it, I wish I could see more of this scene - it feels a little cramped.

Thank you, Gunter. "Cramped" is probably why the others are asking for a landscape version.

Good capture Helen, the waves and the angle of the shot make this a very dynamic image. It's easy for the eye to travel from front to back. Did you get a landscape version of this image?   Posted: 07/12/2017 15:51:39

A nice shot, well composed and I like the leading line, curves and texture.   Posted: 07/13/2017 07:33:09

I have been to Bandon Beach, and I probably photographed these rocks, but your capture is much more interesting. I will have to find my stuff now, to see what I didn't see.........The part that grabs me here is the long long ess curve in two parts. This joins the three rocky bits together, and we never leave the picture........Is there more image on the right, so the dark rock isn't amputated?   Posted: 07/13/2017 19:36:45

Thanks, Jim. Everybody seems to want to see more. As I told Theresa, I can't find these pix to even know whether I shot horizontally as well. I guess the solution would be to just clone out the partial rock on the rt.   Posted: 07/14/2017 01:25:57
