Rainbow-colored Bridalveil Fall by Le Tho Giao

December 2019 - Rainbow-colored Bridalveil Fall

About the Image(s)

I happened to be at the right place at the right time when I came upon a rare sight at the Bridalveil waterfall in Yosemite national Park. The afternoon sun was at such an angle that shone at the water stream to cause a spectacular rainbow to appear. I took this photo with my Nikon D750, Nikkor 28-300mm set at 145mm, f/5.6, 1/160s ISO 100. I did minimal adjustment of hilights and shadows in LR Classic and add a post crop vignetting to pop up the fall.

A good example of being there at the right time. The waterfall looks like a flame! I think a crop from below and the right side would enhance the waterfall that is the main attraction.   Posted: 12/11/2019 14:53:21

Looks like a sharp image with the details in the cliff brought out by the time of day. As Arne said, you were there at the right time. My suggestions would be to lighten the waterfall and take some of the brightness out of the trees. For me, my eyes went to the trees first and then picked up the color in the waterfall.   Posted: 12/11/2019 16:33:52

You really caught it at the right time Le! I agree with cropping some at the bottom and the right and lightening the trees in the foreground which would focus the eye more toward the falls. I like the texture in the cliffs to either side of the falls.   Posted: 12/14/2019 08:28:13

Thank you all for your suggestions. If you look closely at the upper right hand side portion, there is the likeness of a human face, (forehead, eyes and nose) that is looking at the stream. I thought hard about cropping the way you suggested but decided to leave it as is to see if any would share my view. ALl your suggestions regarding croppingand light adjustments are nevertheless valuable.

Happy Holidays to you and your loved ones!   Posted: 12/14/2019 11:55:58

Le, I'm late to the party, just got back from the Middle East. I believe, I agree with the others, crop, lighten trees, really like the detail of the falls and surrounding cliffs. Beautiful color in the falls. Right Time, Right Place.   Posted: 12/14/2019 18:42:40

I really like the rainbow in the falls. I see the face in the rock you are talking about and would not want to crop that out. I would maybe darken the trees in the foreground as Micheal suggested to bring more attention to the falls.   Posted: 12/17/2019 00:13:10
