Northern Fjord by Bill Peake

August 2019 - Northern Fjord

About the Image(s)

Here is an image I took recently during a whale watching day trip out of Davik, Iceland in the Eyjafjörður fjord. It a little rough with scattered showers. I liked the way the clouds hugged the mountains on either side of the fjord and. This shot was taken with a Nikon D7200 with the stock lens 340m at f/8 and shutter speed of 1/500. The ISO was set to 720. Post processing was done in Photoshop. A dehaze layer was added to bring out detail in the sky. A unsharp filter layer was used to bring out additional detail in the mountains and clouds around the mountains. Brightness/contrast layers were used on the sky and around the gull. A saturation layer was selectively used on the color in the mountains to make it pop a bit more. The image was then straightened and cropped.

Well did you see a whale? I liked the ay the waves pull your eye toward the mountains and the cloulds. The bird is a nice addition. Very well done.   Posted: 08/05/2019 12:17:15

I did indeed see a whale, a humpback, and got quite a few photos of it.   Posted: 08/15/2019 00:48:50

Agreeing with Richard - bird was well captured. How was overall experience? And how was the weather in that country? I read about plenty of rain/cloud throughout the year.   Posted: 08/08/2019 10:50:50

It was an amazing experience. We were there for almost 3 weeks. We had a good bit of rain, but also a number of sunny days as well. The day this picture was taken it was cloudy, but the rain held off.   Posted: 08/15/2019 00:52:07

Another really good image. I like the way you are drawn immediately to the mountains and then the sky, which has lots of detail in it. I agree that the bird is a nice touch.   Posted: 08/08/2019 10:54:52

I like that you went with a pano crop, used a shutter speed to capture the bird and wave action and captured the details in the clouds. This image to me has real presence - makes one feel like they are being there - so well done. For me, I would consider bringing up both shadows and details in the mountains to draw the eye more there.   Posted: 08/08/2019 11:15:58

That's a good suggestion. I'll try doing that and see how it looks.   Posted: 08/15/2019 00:53:48

You have captured the rough landscape very well. You might improve the drama by darkening the clouds and lighten some spots on the mountain. Liked the seagull flying into the picture.   Posted: 08/10/2019 02:16:29
