Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, at the entrance to Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay. by David Norris

June 2018 - Point Lonsdale Lighthouse, at the entrance to Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay.

About the Image(s)

ISO 100 f/11 1/500s 70mm from my Nikon D810 with 24-120mm Nikon Lens.
Hand held shot in Aperture priority, deliberately shot under exposed to include the cloud detail.

In the middle summer it was had to believe is was so cold, but nonetheless a group of friends traveled to this location and we had a great day.
The only processing at this time is to straighten the horizon and a slight crop to remove a distracting element on the far right (stair case).
I’d like to hear your thoughts around how to process this image. I use Lightroom and Photoshop CC.

Nicely balanced composition with the clouds and lighthouse. Some suggestions for editing: Crop up from the bottom to eliminate maybe 1/2 the water - the interest is the lighthouse and the clouds. If you PS skills are there, use luminosity masking, or at least select the sky and add additional detail to the clouds by using curves. See if you can get any kind of texture from the darker cloud at the top of the image. I would lighten the lighthouse itself to make it stand out more and clone out the white sign on the road or walkway to the lighthouse.   Posted: 06/08/2018 12:47:46

Welcome to the group, David. Are you from Australia or was this photo taken on a trip?

Nice composition and parabolic line from the top of the lighthouse down to the water. I echo Michael's suggestions. Attached is a 16x9 crop reducing the foreground water (didn't want to lose any of your left hand sky), along with a few Lightroom basic panel edits.

Thanks, Guys I live in Melbourne, Australia.

I've taken onboard both your advice, I've cropped as you both suggested, which suits the 16:9 format. I pumped up the sky using curves as Michael suggestion. Removed the sign, whitened the Lighthouse and increased the greens to bring out some of the plant life.   Posted: 06/10/2018 17:14:55

I really like this one (but then I should...)   Posted: 06/10/2018 18:19:24

Hi Michael, I compare it to Bill's edit and he has a bit more warmth, its darker in the foliage and foreground. Where I tried opening up the foreground and bring out some detail.   Posted: 06/10/2018 18:25:41

Looks like I'm late to the party this round. Welcome David. I agree with other's input, and like your modified version better. However, in the modified version, I would darken a bit at the beach, and the brightest spot on that rock. They become over powering the light house.   Posted: 06/10/2018 22:21:24

Thanks for the welcome Hattie. Added the changes as you suggested, darkened the beach sand and rock with a selective brightness adjustment layer in PS.   Posted: 06/10/2018 22:43:44

Hello David. Most is said before I came in this time. I like the composition, but agree with the others in lighten up the light house, crop the foreground and make it slightly warmer. A good start in the group!   Posted: 06/11/2018 13:36:31

David, I've been traveling in the Southwest, seeing Indian ruins in New Mexico and Big Bend National Park in Texas. Sorry I'm late to the party.

I like the composition of the photo, and what you and the others have done with it. This is one of those photos that brings out the artistic abilities of the group.

I lighten up the shore line to give more definition to the coast, and darken some of the clouds to give a more depth to the photo. I also lighten the lighthouse to pull the viewers eye toward it. I liked the mood of the storm.

Changed the dimensions to 16 x 9

Thanks Group! You've done all what I'd love to do but had no skills to accomplish all the changes! The recommended modifications add artistic proportions to a well composed and well exposed shot. Thanks David for starting out in a positive and contributive manner. We are looking forward to lasting and more succesful particiaption from each and every member of the group.   Posted: 06/21/2018 12:55:00
