About the Image(s)

This is a sculpture that is next to the airstrip at Embry-Riddle. I use a Tamron wide angle to capture the photo. I have two versions of this but chose the cropped version for this month.
I did a channel converion and applied both a Black and White adjustment and black and White gradient map in PSCC, tweaking them until I had something I liked. I removed the drain in the foreground and some other distraction. Ran it through Topaz to get a little radiance. Have a dear friend who is a pilot so I sent him this photo as a gift. I love how the sky rendered in the workflow.

Wow Debbie. This is indeed a very interesting sculpture. Like a bird soaring to the heavens. The underside is intriguing, and I wonder if it is of a shiny surface which reflects what is on the ground beneath it as it looks an interesting effect. I do like that the sky is mainly light which helps the structure to stand out. Only small crit I have is that the obstacle above the bush on the left could be cloned out quite easily as it is a bit of a distraction as is the small Black thingy intruding on the left side. Nice one though.   Posted: 03/10/2019 09:36:25

Thanks! I took a color version of this and at first thought it had been painted. It took me a while to figure out that it was reflections from the surrounds. I left the flight tower in for my friend but agree it could come out. Thanks!!   Posted: 03/10/2019 10:42:15

I have to admit that it took a while before I realized the sculpture is an airplane. I should have recognized it when you said airstrip. I'm sure the picture means more to someone who files in or out of the airfield but to a non flyer this is a good record shot of someone's work of art. I'm not sure if IR makes for a better rendition than a conventional b/w.   Posted: 03/13/2019 16:03:53

To me this is a really interesting piece of art. I have come across several highly reflective sculptures recently, so that must be a trend. I think your choice of using symmetry is a good one for this image; however, I feel the dark shadow bottom left detracts somewhat. I would crop a bit from the bottom and clone out the remainder. The other thought I have is to try a luminosity mask to make the sculpture pop out more from the background.   Posted: 03/17/2019 13:53:15

I like the statue and particularly the reflections in it but I feel there are too many distracting elements to make a strong image. Perhaps I would have gone in closer to eliminate most of the fence and the aircraft in the background. There also seem to be some lines across the sky although I can't see them in the original.   Posted: 03/18/2019 15:59:22

I do like this one, I like your crop, I might try and crop just a little more from the bottom. Also, I would clone out the light on the top left side.   Posted: 03/25/2019 09:10:12
