About the Image(s)

I have been watching videos on processing B&W images instead of using a preset or a profile. Thought this would be a good photo to experiment with to see if I am retaining the info. I went through all sorts of trial and error to get here. In LR, I did basic adjustments and tried to correct the perspective. I took it to PS and removed the edge of the roof that was in the upper right corner. Then I used NIK Silver Effects to get the dark sepia look. Back in PS, I used a levels adjustment to darken the area that you see in the back and the applied a curve to work on that large urn as I wanted to see it. To further direct the viewers eye, I added a black overlay with an inverted mask to add darker tones where i wanted them. I used various opacities to do this. After looking at a bit longer, I decided to remove the plant that wason the left. I was sort of fun seeing how what I could pull out of this!

You have done a great job on this Debbie and the work you have put into it has served you well. There is nothing I would suggest you change. It is an interesting subject, different from the usual type of IR subject material and you have give it a gentle and warm feel to it. Love the toning. It is nice that you have processed this so that you can move right through the doorway to the outside foliage, and the clarity, although not overdone is good. Well done on an excellent job.   Posted: 10/11/2018 03:41:21

I see that there is a clear path for my eye to wander to the back of the image through three or four different layers, all of which hold some interest for me. It doesn't look quite straight to me. I would try to level it along the line formed by the top of the large pot or the roof line toward the back. I love the sepia tone and the contrast between the smooth floor tiles and the roughness of the stone.   Posted: 10/16/2018 13:38:02

LOL, I have attempted to straighten it numerous times and it seems skewed a bit to me as well. The door isn't symmetrical which makes a bit crazed but I will give your idea a whirl. Just saw a presentation on using Topaz Studio for IR photographs, gone to give it a go, too!!

I like this image very much, particularly the way you have framed the pot through the door. Your treatment of the image has brought out the texture of the brickwork and the tiled floor. A lovely and interesting image.   Posted: 10/17/2018 11:23:51

Thanks! It is a strange little place but Ido enjoy photographing there.   Posted: 10/17/2018 15:35:46

Beautiful light and tone, lot of details, textures and nice contrasts. The viewer's eyes are meandering all the way into a garden and want to see more. The only thing if I wanted to be picky would be the white line on the right side of the urn, it's not easy to get rid of, but other than that, it's a very lovely image. Good job Debbie!

Thank you! As I progress with these edits, I try to learn new ways to handle some of these issues. I think I might be able to burn it with a curve. Will give it a whirl!!

The beauty of this one is the stonework around the doorway that is duplicated with the corner column as well as the roof support. The huge pot nicely breaks up the repetition. You went through a lot of steps to arrive as the final result and it was worth it.   Posted: 10/20/2018 16:21:24
