About the Image(s)

These decaying buildings stood in Payson, AZ. They are remnants of an old homestead, and they just called out to me to take their picture. However, the result was rather drab, though it did tell its own story.
I brightened the image a bit, using a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer. I only wanted the buildings brightened, so I inverted the mask to black (Ctrl i) and painted with white over the buildings. To add artistic merit to the image, I decided to add an image of old rust, as an appropriate texture for the image of this decaying legacy to the past. To change the focal point of light, I used NIK Color Efex Pro with Darken/Lighten Center preset and placed the center at the far end of the buildings.

A fine image, showing the delapidated buildings to good advantage. Well done. I think maybe I'd have reduced the opacity on the rust layer slightly, but that's just my personal preference.
You can also create an inverted mask by holding the Alt key when selecting the mask icon.   Posted: 12/07/2019 15:12:43

What a wonderful building. You chose your texture to highlight it very well! I love old, crumbling buildings, and I feel this one gets short shrift because everything in the image gets textured. For my taste, I would include the texture only on the building, thus emphasizing it's decay. The beautiful trees would add to it's look of decay. I see terrific potential here.   Posted: 12/10/2019 09:27:43

I too love old buildings. This one has a lot of character. I agree that your rust texture adds to the "old" look of the building, but I think reducing the opacity of the rust in the sky area would work well. Your technique of lightening up the far end of the buildings was a great idea. They now contribute much more to the scene. Nicely processed!   Posted: 12/10/2019 23:54:15

Georgianne, Lightening the buildings toward the back worked well as did the rust texture on the buildings. I agree with some of the other comments that the opacity of the texture needs to be reduced in the sky and trees.   Posted: 12/16/2019 21:25:43

I like your original, Georgianne. Would have preferred a more subtle texture.   Posted: 12/25/2019 11:59:33

All perfect now as the only comment I would have made is that the texture was too heavy. Lovely image.   Posted: 12/27/2019 15:55:08
