About the Image(s)

This image is an attempt to put daily drudgery aside and enter a realm of calm and wishful thinking. Several balloons were added first to the sky background. Then the pier and little girl were placed to give balance to the lower right side. I wanted the pier to disappear into the distance so it looked like it was floating in fog, so I used a white brush tool at various reduced opacities across the lower third of the sky and at the end of the pier. A long shadow was added behind the little girl. The balloons seemed too soft and kind of blurry, so I used Poster Edges on them to help them pop forward from the background. The rest of the image was left softer so it supported, rather than competed with, the balloons. Lastly, into On1 for Rich Glow and Big Softy Vignette at reduced opacity. Deep breath - aahhh - I think I do feel calmer

Your Poster Edges-On1-Rich Glow witch's brew works very well in this composite. The balloons have that magical realism quality that is supported by the colors in the sky and the mist on the dock. The long shadow of the girl strengthens the idea of the sunset. Everything works so well together. I didn't realize magical realism was so cathartic.   Posted: 11/05/2019 12:37:47

Thanks Alan. I seem to be in a period of escapist compositing. :-)   Posted: 11/09/2019 13:07:02

Thanks for the therapy. I too feel better for looking at your image.
It's a difficult choice, but I think you've come up with my image of the month again.
The whole composition and treatment work so well. You've created a masterpiece!   Posted: 11/07/2019 15:41:33

Again, your work is outstanding, in my opinion. I love what you have done with the sky and water and fog. Overall, the image is extremely appealing. It looks like the girl is in a dream, where the pier is floating in the sky! Lovely!   Posted: 11/07/2019 21:07:14

Thanks Georgianne. I was hoping the pier would look like it was floating in mid air, so I'm glad it came across that way to you. :)   Posted: 11/09/2019 13:10:53

Jan, you have created a beautiful image. The softness of colors gives a feeling of peacefulness. The fog/mist and floating balloons add to that. The girl on the dock in the soft green dress anchors the image. Wonderful work.   Posted: 11/09/2019 12:21:39

Jan, Way back in March I asked how you achieve your color overlays, and you asked what software I use. For some reason I only saw your reply today. I do not use On1. I use Photoshop. Sorry for the long delay in responding. Thank you for your offer to help.   Posted: 11/09/2019 19:11:34

Happy to, Alan. Do you object to doing it by email, in case we have a back-and-forth exchange? Might be easier that way.   Posted: 11/11/2019 10:04:12

I love this image. When I first opened it I wondered what you had used on the balloons, I would never have thought of using Poster Edges! Beautiful colours and composition.   Posted: 11/18/2019 22:06:45

Thanks Denise. The Poster Edges filter is one of my favorites and I use it a lot. I find it to be most effective when I keep the settings extremely subtle.   Posted: 11/19/2019 18:24:49
