July 2020 - Vasquez Rocks

About the Image(s)

This is one of my favorite places to hike and photograph, both for the rugged beauty of the park and because STAR TREK has shot quite a few scenes here. I was delighted to see this rock formation show up again in the new STAR TREK: PICARD show. One year, my family and I all dressed up in STAR TREK outfits and photographed our Christmas card picture in front of this rock formation. People kept stopping to look, so we assumed they thought a professional STAR TREK shoot was happening. That was kind of funny. :) The day I took this photograph, the sky was deep blue. I took this particular photograph just as a puff of cloud showed up to the right of the rock formation while several people were climbing on it.

I shot this handheld with a Nikon D7200, f/14, 1/400 sec., ISO-400. In Photoshop, I increased the saturation and also slightly increased the contrast and brightness.

I saw some familiar elements. I grew up in Santa Barbara area and the far mountains looked familiar. But now you tell me my inner-Trekkie has to come out! I do think Capt Kirk and a Lizard guy in the foreground might add to the overall image. I never knew that was near Palmdale otherwise I would have stopped on my many visits to the area.   Posted: 07/09/2020 17:31:08

It's a great place for Trekkies, especially this particular rock formation! :)   Posted: 07/13/2020 23:08:46

Beautiful rock formation, good image detail and beautiful colours. The small cloud in the background fits. I can well understand that this scene was selected for STAR TRECK.   Posted: 07/19/2020 10:22:12

You have taken this well, the placement is spot on with that little gap of footpath just giving you room to move through the foreground to the rocks itself. They are beautifully defined against that blue sky and the detail is spot on. Great control of the light, so easy to overexpose. That's it beam me up, Scotty.   Posted: 07/20/2020 09:09:08
