Cadillac Mountain in Fog and Rain by Elizabeth Mangham

July 2020 - Cadillac Mountain in Fog and Rain

About the Image(s)

Cadillac Mountain is the highest peak in Acadia National Park. Several friends and I intended to photograph the early morning view. As you can see there was no view that day. However the rain and fog gave us a special view. I had taken several shots from this spot and thought to myself, "if only someone had a red umbrella". Suddenly someone did and I was thrilled.

Dehaze was used to brighten up a foggy scene. The other adjustment was adding a little more foliage to the lower right corner which had a significant spot of very dark wet soil which pulled the eye down and away from the focal point.

Camera: Canon 5D Mark III Lens: Canon 24-105

I love the feel and idea of this image and there is nothing better than just standing or sitting there watching the sea and this sums that up.
But when I look at this I do wonder if the foreground adds anything to the image or in a way draws you away from the man and the umbrella. The bush and the crack connect to do that. So I tried out a crop which I must admit I quite like and still gives the feel of a wet day watch the sea.   Posted: 07/08/2020 12:31:32

Great minds must think...? As I was looking at this, I just felt a little off and I said, what is the story and elements? Obviously the man and umbrella, but the crashing waves. Throw in a foggy background. What was the foreground doing for me? Not much... Then I read Paul's commit   Posted: 07/08/2020 16:37:53

I certainly agree with you. Thanks.   Posted: 07/09/2020 12:28:41

Elizabeth, I just noticed your constructive comments of my Gp 22, June image. You have a good point and I thank you for sharing.

The coastline of Maine brings back many wonderful memories. You were fortunate to get someone with a red umbrella, but we never saw the sun, mornings or nights, during the full week of the 2013 Portland Maine PSA Conference.   Posted: 07/09/2020 11:38:59

I was there in 2016. We had some really nice weather until we got to Cadillac Mt. At the top we could barely see the edge of the water-it was really foggy. A lovely place regardless of the weather. And I love fog in photos. We rarely have fog in southern Louisiana.   Posted: 07/09/2020 12:49:51

Paul, your suggestion is well taken. I do like it better with the bush cropped out.

The red umbrella is such a great addition to this beautiful setting! I agree with Paul: cropping out the foliage from the foreground keeps your eye in the scene.   Posted: 07/14/2020 04:09:25

Good picture. The person with the red umbrella attracts the attention. I agree with Paul that the green bush in the foreground adds little to the message of the picture. If the picture showed more sky instead of the bush, the rain, which is part of the picture, would come out better.   Posted: 07/19/2020 10:50:27
