Badlands at Sunset by Bob Wills

May 2020 - Badlands at Sunset

About the Image(s)

I took this image in 2010 in the Badlands, South Dakota, on the loop road. When I first started shooting a digital camera, I thought this would be a great test for landscape photography. The National Park is one of my favorites. Nikon D90, 18-200 mm lens at 55 mm, ISO 200, 1/100 sec @ f6.3, Aperture Priority, matrix metering, hand held.
Post done in LR, tone color and cropping.

Just beautiful. One of the places I'd love to get to some day.   Posted: 05/03/2020 08:19:09

If COVID lockdown had not happened I might be there now. Its on my to do list. Interesting feel from the overall reddish colors. Its almost as if thats fire and not clouds above. One thought... Have you try dodging the middle of the photograph? My eyes keep bouncing between to bright areas top and bottom, losing the middle.   Posted: 05/08/2020 14:14:50

There wasn't any smoke. so I probably pulled the darks too much or pushed the sunlight too much or both, and burned the hills poorly to create depth. Good calls.   Posted: 05/13/2020 16:17:00

The fiery colors in both the sky and rocks works well together, as do the horizontal lines in both the rocks and clouds. It looks like a very scenic spot.   Posted: 05/14/2020 06:53:52

Being someone from the other side of the pond, I take it that the badlands are the one in South Dakota.
This is a dramatic image with a fantastic sky and must have been a wondrous sight to see. The effect must have got even better the lower that light got. Good shot.   Posted: 05/17/2020 06:52:55

Thank you. I expanded my narrative and spelled out SD, for our "Worldwides." It is a little remote, even in this area, so there aren't many visitors. Either early in the morning or late at night gets beautiful light.   Posted: 05/17/2020 08:59:41

Beautiful picture with a texture of the rocks never seen before. The horizontal lines in the rocks form a good contrast to the jagged rock tops. The reddish and contrasting clouds do the rest. This is a picture that captivates my eyes and makes me wonder where something like this can be seen.   Posted: 05/17/2020 11:01:48

Bob, this is a truly beautiful capture. I love the sky and the red hills. The Dakotes seem to have some wonderful under photographed scenes. And the National Parks can't be beat for always offering up great landscape images. My favorite part of this image is the dark gold near the right side. It is wonderful. I agree that the other parts could be toned down slightly. Love the sky.   Posted: 05/18/2020 15:28:19
