Star Wars Rogue One Location in Iceland by Marilyn Peake

August 2019 - Star Wars Rogue One Location in Iceland

About the Image(s)

I took this photograph on my trip to Iceland with an adventure tour group last month. It's the spot where the opening scene to STAR WARS ROGUE ONE was shot. We were driven across lava fields in a monster truck that stopped near this formation. From there, we hiked to a glacier where the trek guide used a pickaxe to chip away the outer layer on part of the glacier, then took the crystal clear ice underneath, dropped pieces of it into shot glasses and poured Katla vodka over the ice for us to drink. The vodka's named after the Katla volcano that lies beneath the glacier. That was pretty cool.
I shot this photo handheld with a Nikon D60, f/8, 1/400 sec., ISO-400. I edited this in PaintShop Pro. I straightened and cropped the photo, then increased the saturation and focus and decreased the brightness a bit.

I think it was a great idea to chip the ice and give you all a shot of the vodka. To my eye, I see 2 significant elements in the photo and that is the mountain and the cloud in front of it near the summit. The mountain looks quite flat to me so you might consider burning some of the darker areas between the ridges. You would need to vary the amount of burning to make it look real but I think that would increase the sense of 3 dimensionality on the mountain. I would then do whatever I could to separate the cloud from the sky in the background. That may be a bit of a challenge but if you can do it, I think the photo would benefit.   Posted: 08/07/2019 11:25:18

Sounds like a wonderful trip for the young. I find the story is really nice and I do think Ken's suggestions would make this a wonderful image. Nothing looks blown out and so you captured what you needed to in order to make this into a really good trophy.   Posted: 08/09/2019 16:55:20

Thanks so much, Elizabeth. Actually, I'm not young. This adventure tour group caters to people 55 and over. It was pretty cool, something I wasn't sure I'd ever get to do.   Posted: 08/14/2019 05:00:02

The Vodka sounds great it sounds like a great trip. But I look at this image and all I can think of, "you can only this image with three to five pictures. One for the sky, two for the mountain & two for the foreground then combine them in Lightroom raw combine and you would have a tonally perfect image. This image would then have popped.
But the Vodka sounds better.   Posted: 08/15/2019 09:55:43

Thanks, Paul. I realize I seriously need to learn more about photo editing. It's something I plan to do over the next year. Thanks for your suggestions! And, yeah, the vodka was great.   Posted: 08/16/2019 23:59:56

Beautiful image with black lower third, pyramid-shaped mountain in the middle and slightly textured clouds. It would be worth trying to emphasize the clouds better (contrast?) and vignetting the image easily. Maybe you can do something with the 'heart' in the mountain?   Posted: 08/15/2019 10:04:18

Thanks so much for your suggestions. And thanks so much for pointing out the heart in the mountain! I didn't even see that.   Posted: 08/17/2019 00:00:54

Nicely done. Uncluttered composition, sharp and good color and exposure. For PID presentation tou might consider a thin stroke border.   Posted: 08/19/2019 16:27:33
