House of Ill Repute by Bob Wills

August 2019 - House of Ill Repute

About the Image(s)

This was shot in Olympia WA. It is our capitol building, where the legislature takes all workers' money and redistributes it to those companies and individual groups who support lobbyists. I converted it into B&W (no gray areas in government) and added a radiance to it, to add perspective to this most hallowed ground.
Fuji XT-2, 16-55 mm lens @ 17 mm. ISO 200, 1/300 sec @f11. Processed in PS CC. Tripod of course, since I can no longer hold myself steady, much less a camera.

I guess nothing has changed in 2500 years in politics. I don't know what radiance is but the dome looks "fuzzy to me while the writing on the left-hand building is quite sharp. I would think a 17 mm lens at f/11 would have massive depth of field   Posted: 08/07/2019 11:42:55

Nice title for a government building. I really like the columns. I wonder how the upper story in the center is sharp, but the story just below it is really fuzzy. Cameras and lens are really strange in many ways. I like the way the eye goes immediately to the dome and I love those sharp columns. I really can't think of any solution for the fuzzy part and don't know of anything else I would try to change. Maybe try again with a different lens.   Posted: 08/09/2019 17:20:33

You have an interesting perspective on this building (double meaning intended). I really like that you gave it a soaring look due to tilting the camera up and creating vertical tapering. That is not distortion, by the way, it is the actual vertical perspective that both the eye and camera see. I very much like the overall composition.   Posted: 08/11/2019 19:45:52

I love this point of view that makes the building soar up toward a turbulent sky. I think black-and-white adds to the effectiveness of the image. It bothers me that I can only see part of the word before "Building" and wonder if more of the left side of the building could be shown to reveal that word.   Posted: 08/14/2019 05:22:23

Love your title and I have to agree that it was and your be pleased to know that I killed all that was in there on my Xbox.
This is my type of image, wonderful architecture, great angle to show off the dome and the columns. Your tonal work is spot on and the sky is strong for this type of image.

I must admit the first instant I opened this I thought St. Pauls, London. It is surprising how so many buildings are built of this builds design.   Posted: 08/15/2019 10:24:10

I like this picture and think it's good that the perspective has not been corrected. Thus, the lines point towards the center, where the dome forms the dominant part of the picture. The cloudy sky completes the whole work.   Posted: 08/16/2019 09:55:57

Thanks for all your excellent comments.
Radiance is just another use of Gaussian blur, much like a glow. I need to work on my masking skills.
I didn't notice the missing words[s] before building. Gives me an excuse for more image taking.
Unfortunately, I don't have a video game console. I would not suggest in this age expressing any killing of bureaucrats, no matter how deserving. Just cast our votes accordingly.
