House on the Hammond River by Lloyd Goldsmith

October 2018 - House on the Hammond River

About the Image(s)

This picture was made with my Sony A6300 and the Sony 16-50 MM lens. It was shot at 28mm @ 1/250 @ f8 @ ISO 400. The sky was darkened using the graduated filter in LR. The reflections and texture of the water were enhanced with the brush tool by reducing the exposure in those areas. The colors of the foliage on the shore were a bit too subdued so I brought them out with the use of some clarity, vibrance and slight dehaze.

Nice thought with the curve of the river and trying to bring out the fall colors more. Two thoughts that I have: (1) Possible include the whole tree on the upper right, as well as its reflection, (2), Brighten up the building and the dark part of the cloud above it which may help with the halo along the building   Posted: 10/11/2018 08:52:14

Lloyd, this is a very pleasant scene, Your composition is really nice. The grasses and house are well done. I find that there is too much difference in the color of the top sky and that to the left of the house. It might help to use the adjustmenty tool in RAW and make the changes more complementary of each other. I do like the fall colors. Very nice over all.   Posted: 10/15/2018 21:41:53

This is a pleasant, well composed scene. From the title and composition, one would expect the house(s) to be much more prominent though. The houses are in the right place, but tone values are exactly opposite from what they need to be; my eye is drawn to the (brighter) river and marsh and away from the (darker) structures. You can make the buildings bright enough to fix that by darkening the corners, tinkering with all the colors in Selective Color, Vibrance, and Saturation.   Posted: 10/16/2018 17:48:47

I see what you mean, Larry and like it but I think the colors on the foliage are a little overdone. I'm going to redo it as you suggest with more subdued colors. Thanks.   Posted: 10/16/2018 20:04:26

You have seen a pleasing image and have composed it well, I to would have like the tree to be whole and not so cropped. I am not going to say how you can fix the picture in front of me as I think you are fighting a losing battle.
There is a woodworking law that says measure twice and cut once and in a way this is also true about photography. We need to think of what we are taking and then take what is needed. With an image like this you are looking at an HDR or bracketed image to cope with the variation in light, shade, contrast and reflections. You are never going to get this right with one image and 95% of cameras are going to struggle with this. If this was me I would have looked at this and taken 4 images, Water, Sky, Bank and building and the rest. Then bought together in PS with Luminosity Masks.

Your focusing and the detail on the far bank is spot on but the light is just beating you.   Posted: 10/18/2018 10:27:22
