Windows at Arches National Park by Bob Patrick

October 2018 - Windows at Arches National Park

About the Image(s)

This is a rock formation in Arches National Park called the Windows. Shot image on 9-17 at 7:26 AM local time. Hand held D800e, Sigma 12-24 F4.5 at F8, and 24mm. 1/400 second. ISO 200. Tweaked saturation a bit in PS 5.1.

That afternoon we hiked to Delicate Arch, where I learned about altitude and being out of shape. Ankles and shins hurt for 3 days after that hike. Came out by flashlight, which was another adventure.

I think the early morning light and the addition of the branches in the foreground makes this delightful. The shadows also make for a more dynamic image. Nice shooting. I hope looking at this makes all your pain seem worth it.   Posted: 10/07/2018 16:46:07

Nice early morning light and nice to have things in the foreground   Posted: 10/11/2018 08:53:50

I loved your account of your learning experience. I have determined that I am too old for some adventures. A hard pill to swallow. The light and the shadfows are beautiful. I would like to see a shot that includes all of both arches. With the branches I think it would look like a mask. Color is perfect. Nice work!   Posted: 10/15/2018 21:53:42

This must have been great to see live and the early morning light must have lit this place up great. Have the foreground interest is great. I know you were out of breath and hurting, but thinking what was in front of you before you snapped would have improved this image. A movement to the left to use those logs in a better way and also get the second Arch out from the tree would have improved the view and then focusing on the logs at F8 to F11 would have got that pin sharp.

But I bet you the hike was worth while to see all this.   Posted: 10/18/2018 10:39:07

Nice image and good color. Just wondering if the overall exposure were dropped 1/4 to 1/2 stop if it would heighten the impact of the colors. And I would try to clone out the tree on the right. Well done.   Posted: 10/21/2018 14:49:18
