Rainy Night in the City
Camera: Sony a6300
Description: Photo was taken on a photo walk during the PSA conference in Pittsburgh in October of 2017. As soon as we left to go on the walk, it started raining and we took cover under the awnings of Heinz Hall. I saw the lady crossing the street with an umbrella and took the photo.

I still prefer night shots in colour because I like the reflections which show up so well on the wet street. I started wondering which would be a better crop and in the end, I thought your crop was still too busy so I decided a massive crop off the left side so that the words Six Penn are retained as this then emphasises the person with the umbrella and creates a triangle between the sign, the person and the car. I felt the left side was rather uninteresting, although the original shows a man running and he might have been a feature if he'd been a bit further into the frame.   Posted: 03/09/2023 06:13:07

I have done two versions. The first is as I suggested initially and the second is even more draconian as well as lightening the central figure to help her stand out. Sorry Nan, I have demolished your original image!   Posted: 03/16/2023 05:48:18

Thank you for your thoughts. I have probably cropped this 50 ways but was always leaving most of the building in on the left. I really like your first crop below - I like to see the tops of the buildings and I definitely wanted the lady with the umbrella to be the focus. And I also like the sign on the right. Thank you!   Posted: 03/31/2023 20:55:13

There is a lot of interest here in "street photography" and this really qualifies. I like the crop suggestion of Diana's, however, and in order to zero in better on the primary subject. And the left doesn't add anything to the main story. I like the conversion to B&W.

Thanks Wes. I do agree now that most of the building should be cropped off. And while I like the red lights and reflection in the water, I still prefer this one in black and white too.   Posted: 03/31/2023 20:57:21

Diana has nailed the crop. I agree. I also like the monochrome.   Posted: 03/12/2023 22:35:53

I like Diana's crop. I like the color better, but if you do use color, then the crop is more important to get rid of the people on the left. The reds, yellow and orange colors blend nicely.   Posted: 03/13/2023 10:25:46

Thanks Tom! I have to agree that Diana's crop does put the focus on the best parts of the image. When editing this photo, I was always torn between the color and the black and white. I liked all the red and reflections in the photo. But still lean towards the monochrome.   Posted: 03/31/2023 21:15:33

This wet weather looks similar to what we've been experiencing here in Central California this winter. I tend to prefer to stay somewhere warm and dry, but the interesting reflections in your image lead me to question whether I should brave the wet weather more often. I agree with the suggestion to crop out the left side of the image, and I do like the colors. However, your decision to convert to monochrome fits more with the mood of the weather.   Posted: 03/25/2023 23:24:25

I like warm and dry weather also! I live near Pittsburgh and we definitely get a lot of rain. Always a chance to get reflection images after the rain too. Thanks for your thoughts.   Posted: 03/31/2023 21:11:14
