About the Image(s)

My hometown Bergen, a coastal city, is surrounded by mountains. In the early spring, if the climatic conditions are right, and the wind is totally absent, thick fog can be created. It burns off later in the day. I grabbed my camera, and got myself in position on top of the tallest mountain (using a cable car). You just have a few hours from morning daylight until the fog disappears. The view is a little dramatic - the city below is hidden by the fog, and you can just see the top of a few lower mountains, and then far into the Atlantic ocean. All covered by fog. The girl with her dog, and the part of one of the cable car towers, makes the picture's story, I think."

For me this image has a nice impact, love the fog & soft effect it gives. The woman & her dog gives some perspective. I would not have known about the cable car towers. But for me the tower & cables detract a little, but that is just me. Your subject & composition is impressive...   Posted: 11/02/2020 21:57:23

Russ says it all--I have the same comments. Fine shot, and you made a special effort to get to the location at the right time. I think the partial view of the cable car machinery does not help. It might have worked if you were directly under the cables and had a leading line going down the mountain.   Posted: 11/04/2020 11:56:24

Really great image, and your were so fortunate to have a person in the image to add scale and interest. You obviously did your research in your area and were at the right time and place. Going with monochrome simplified the image that did not have a lot of color anyway. I understand your wanting to have the cable car tower in the image, but because it is so small and only a small part of the tower shown, I think that it is distraction from the interesting natural phenomena.   Posted: 11/04/2020 17:10:00

You planned and carried out this image really well. I like the clouds/fog with the top of the mountains just peaking through, and the girl and dog add an interesting focal point. I do agree with the others that I find the cable car tower and wires somewhat distracting. Also, have you considered cropping the sky out just at where the fog ends? I think I might prefer this image without the sky. The contrast looks really nice on my monitor, and from my own experience, is very difficult to achieve with lots of fog and clouds.   Posted: 11/10/2020 00:21:21

Thanks to all you folks. And I will make the cable car tower disappear. Fully agree. Don't really know why I kept it there. Perhaps it was to tell people that I did not climb the mountain, but leisurely made use of the cable car...   Posted: 11/11/2020 06:25:03

Agree about the cable car! get rid of it. However, I really like the sea of fog and the other mountains appearing through it, and it works very well in Mono. I wasn't so sure I like the sky as it was quite a bit lighter than the rest, so I cropped it off and felt that brought the eye down to the mountains more. I removed the cable car at the same time.   Posted: 11/16/2020 09:09:32

One last thought. Now that Diana has suggested this last image, it occurred to me that if you take out the dog, then it looks like a climber having just made their ascent.   Posted: 11/27/2020 11:40:52
