Old bottle by Lynne Hollingsworth

October 2018 - Old bottle

About the Image(s)

"Old Bottle"

Exposure: 1/4 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100

Nikon 105mm macro lens.

I've had this bottle since I was small. We used to have our milk and bread delivered to our milk box and this is from that era. Cropped and straightened, then used Nik software Silver Effects Pro, then a Pinhole filter.

So a couple of questions for the group - Is this image enough to hold your attention, and do you think images such as these (all black background) need a thin boarder to designate where the image ends?

Wow, nice shot. Yes, a thin white border would help.
Whenever I encounter someone showing something they have had all their lives, and talking about it so poignantly, I have the same reaction: do more! How about preparing an entire show of a dozen or so shots, all with this single milk bottle as the main subject. You could make the images VERY different from each other. Such a clear and precise image. I like the stark black background. At first I thought the bottle needed to be cleaned up. Then I read that it was old and understood. It could still be cleaned crystal clear, though and perhaps have some drops of water or milk on it. My mind keeps going to the spots and gets distracted from the beauty of the photo.   Posted: 10/03/2018 19:50:39

What do you mean, you used to have milk delivered? I still do! In fact my milk comes in bottles very like this. Very few people still have deliveries as they go to the supermarket and buy large quantities in plastic, but I prefer milk which doesn't taste of plastic.

Now to the picture. I don't think there is enough to hold the interest for long. This partly because the bottle is a single central feature, and with such a stark background there is nothing else to put it into context. I do like the slight dirtyness on the glass and you've done well with the lighting, which gives it a feeling of smoothness and roundness. Could you set up a more complex image with the bottle and something else from the past? Perhaps a glass of milk beside it? I do like having a 1 or 2 pixel line around these sort of black background shots so they are separated from the surroundings.

Yes, you need a small white or grey edge to show where the image stops and the website background starts. It is a nice sharp image, but it needs something else. Maybe a bit of milk (1/4th or 1/3rd) up from the bottom, and then a drinking straw.   Posted: 10/25/2018 13:53:02
