About the Image(s)

When I took this image I couldn't help but think about the how in the cycle of nature the new is always ready to replace the old. I've cropped this down from the original, then tried to further crop, but this seemed to have the most impact. I blurred and darkened the background, then added a vignette filter. I'm interested in your thoughts about the image.

Lynne, let's see your original, to see how you chose your crop.   Posted: 12/04/2017 22:45:33

Now I see how you cropped. This comes down to individual taste. I like how you cut off the fresh daisy, but I would have cut less, although still cut, maybe leaving 5% of the blossom out of the frame--you have a daring idea there. If the leaf behind and the flower below showed, then I would have dimmed them.   Posted: 12/06/2017 20:54:40

Good floral image... Your crop is fine. A mono image usually needs a good dark black and good white, so I suggest that you use the curves layers and start with "medium contrast" to darken your black and lighten your whites. Also, use the finger dropper and select the gray in the background of the image to know where it appear on the curve, then pull that dot down to darken your background some more. Good job.

Thanks Carol. I'll do what you suggest. Your input gets my images to where I envision them.   Posted: 12/11/2017 17:32:52

I agree with Carol again. The whole image needs much greater contrast to give impact. I do like the version Carol produced. I like the crop -with the emphasis on the dying flower -all droopy and with interesting spikes. The background must be made much darker to make them stand out.   Posted: 12/17/2017 06:13:36

I like the blacking of the background in Carol's version, but I wonder if 'sense of place' is lost. In the original, the background is just enough to give that without losing the detail of the subject. What are the thoughts of others?   Posted: 12/18/2017 08:44:09

I don't think the sense of place is important when the author is going for pure pictorialism and not Nature. I like the way Carol's makes it stand out more.   Posted: 12/18/2017 08:47:17

I see your point. Thanks   Posted: 12/18/2017 09:19:36

I agree with what was said by Carol and Diana. A greater contrast and the almost black background makes the flowers stand out. The " audacious" frame is interesting.
I also think that the sense of place in a pictorial image is not so important.

Interesting juxtaposition of the dying flower with the fresh blossom. I like the way you have cropped this image to make that your subject. Although, as most of you already know, I do not tend to be a fan of completely dark/black backgrounds much of the time, I do think Carol's revision lends itself well to this image and helps draw my attention to your subject.   Posted: 12/19/2017 23:58:10
