Africa by Paul Roth

April 2021 - Africa

About the Image(s)

The image was taken in Africa several years ago. This little guy was hiding behind a tree, then peaked out. I manage to get one shot of him. The image was taken with Nikon D5, 70-200 lens at 185mm f2.8, 800 iso. It was opened in light room, with minor adjustments to exposure, contrast and shadows. Then converted to B/W.

Paul - another excellent portrait from your travels - the expression on the boy's face is delightful and there appears to be eye contact between the two of you. I would consider toning down the highlights in the background, especially those at the top of the frame. I find that the clone tool in darken mode very useful in dealing with highlights that a masked Curves adjustment cannot fix

Excellent portrait of the boy. Excellent skin tonality that is not too dark.   Posted: 04/07/2021 17:23:11

Hi Paul: What a cute lad. Nice catch light in his eyes. If this were my image, I might consider a slightly tighter crop from the right hand side and add a vignette to darken the highlights a bit. Very nice capture.   Posted: 04/08/2021 06:50:57

Perfect portrait, for all the reasons your group colleagues have mentioned.
I see an undercurrent of social commentary in this image. I think the boy has rotten teeth, a common problem among less advantaged peoples.   Posted: 04/08/2021 23:24:34

Paul, good timing in capturing this portrait. A very appealing portrait. I agree regarding perhaps the need to tone down the bright areas in the background.   Posted: 04/09/2021 14:38:40

A wonderful portrait.
Yes, the background highlight could be a distraction but they do not bother me.
The portrait is, for me, strong enough to overcome that little drawback.   Posted: 04/14/2021 15:11:23

Hi Paul
This so has winner written all over it,fantastic expression the pose so makes it peeping cheekily around the tree,as every good portrait needs the eyes are pin sharp, one I and a lot of others would love to have taken.   Posted: 04/16/2021 13:21:27
