Lindisfarne Boat Sheds by Peter Clark, APSA, GMPSA, EFIAP/p, FRPS

December 2020 - Lindisfarne Boat Sheds

About the Image(s)

The iconic boat sheds below Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island which lies off the coast of Northumberland and is accessed via a tidal causeway. Made from upturned fishing boats – a tradition which goes back centuries, this image is quite unique in that it shows the original boat sheds in 2003. In 2005 two of the boat sheds were destroyed by fire and those that can be seen today are authentic replacements.

An early digital Image captured on my first DSLR - a Canon EOS 10D fitted with the 15-30mm f3.5 lens set at 15mm (35mm equivalent 24mm), 1/250 sec at f9.5, ISO 100.

Initially processed in colour in CS6 with Nik CEP 4 Detail Extractor and Pro Contrast layers and a series of masked curves. Converted to monochrome in Nik SEP Pro 2 and tweaked on a series of Curves adjustment layers both masked and unmasked and cleaned up with a Topaz Denoise A1 layer. As usual this jpeg was sharpened using the High Pass filter in Soft Light mode and sharpening halos removed where necessary.

The way you've positioned here is just right, Peter. You've enabled the viewer to see more of the roofs, and the highlights on the roof lines are just the bonus in this image, which works so well in black and white, with its repeating lines and shapes. Even the dreary sky contributes with it's repeating waves, yet not distracting.   Posted: 12/06/2020 16:34:58

HI Peter: What a great capture. How clever to put something old to good use. My eye is drawn to what appears to be 3 little boxes on the lower left side of the image... can't figure out what that might be. The light on the boat sheds and clouds is really nice. Congrats on your galaxies!   Posted: 12/09/2020 05:11:30

Thanks Ella - the 'three little boxes' are the light falling on the fence post between the horizontal slats. Missed that and should have reduced the brightness locally :(   Posted: 12/11/2020 09:03:32

Hi Peter
I am sure like mw, you have seen many images of these boat sheds but this one stands out from the crowd the composition as always with you is perfect the lighting on the front of sheds is sublime and for me the sky is absolutely fabulous and adds so much to the image, and as you say the shot being pre 2005 makes it a very important piece of social history.   Posted: 12/09/2020 15:50:27

Peter, This is scene only 40 miles or so from me. I see many pictures of the boat sheds and have my own. This is possibly the best example I have seen to date, even taking Joe Cornish into account!   Posted: 12/12/2020 04:25:08

Hi Peter, another good image. After noting Ella's comment about the fence, perhaps toning it done may help?   Posted: 12/12/2020 13:57:04

I agree - done on the master copy.   Posted: 12/14/2020 03:54:54

Very well done Peter. I like the perception of a leading line of the boat sheds as they decrease in size due to perspective. This draws my eye across the image in a pleasing manner.   Posted: 12/16/2020 13:32:43
