Hawaii Sunset by Paul Roth

October 2020 - Hawaii Sunset

About the Image(s)

The image was taken in Hawaii with a Nikon D5, 70-200 mm lens at f20, 160 ISO 10D filter 30 seconds. The image was opened in Lightroom, after basic adjustments, and a crop the image was converted to B/W. I needed to tone down some of the highlights, then added a 2 pixel border. I typically prefer colour for this type of image, however, I do like the layering effect the b/w image offers.

Where and on which island were you when you captured this image? I like this image but, personally, I am confused as to the direction of light. Some of the rocks appear to have a source of light from the left side (producing what looks like side lighting) while the water in the foreground appears to have back lighting (but not the water behind the rocks).   Posted: 10/05/2020 15:04:01

Michael the water behind the rocks are the waves breaking, and the spray. Keep in mind that it was a 30 second exposure. We were on Kaui I believe when the image was taken.   Posted: 10/05/2020 15:13:36

Hi Paul- I like your composition very much - great detail but has that softness of mist or haze, the horizon is straight, and beautifully processed. I suspect this image is lovely in color as well?   Posted: 10/07/2020 05:20:42

Paul - I too like your composition - the layering in the image gives it great depth. The spray behind the rocks across the middle serves to separate them from the sea behind.

I would have liked to see a little more sky above the distant mountains as indeed there is in the colour version which I have to say I prefer - the colours are great.   Posted: 10/10/2020 06:11:46

Hello Paul. I like the tonal bands which add drama to the image. The sea mist adds additional mystery. By the way I think that the color version has great possibilities as well.   Posted: 10/11/2020 14:11:19

Paul, this is an image I like greatly.

The image reminds me about the western isles of Scotland.

Your long exposure was on the money and has created an excellent atmospheric shot.   Posted: 10/16/2020 02:26:30
